One of the main responsibilities of the volunteers from the VGCD is to go out into those areas in which the street kids are found to frequent, such as the
market place, public parks, night-spots etc. There they can meet with the young children and teenagers and get to know them, building up a
relationship where the children can trust and accept the volunteers, and be willing to accept their assistance.
The Home: The home/headquarters of the VGCD is situated on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, and is
avaliable for all those children and teenagers in need of assistance. The home acts as a place
which provides the basic essentials for living, as well as being the center for teaching development activities of the group and giving advice to those who need it. Vocational and Life Skills Training As an alternative to high risk work that the young people may
have been involved with, the center coordinates for these people to join vocational training programs suitable to each persons needs, while the center also currently offers training
in the areas of batik craft work and baked goods, taught and practiced on the premises.
As well as teaching them skills they can use to gain an honest job, our program includes Life
Skills Training which will involve training in how to read and respond to high risk situations
(how to say 'No' without backlash), as well as how to control negative emotions and feelings, and building relationships with others.
These skills will be taught using games, plays, and small group sessions that will enable them
to grow in self-confidence and develop a good moral outlook, becoming individuals our society can be proud of. |
