ISSUE: A Norton AntiVirus (NAV) Auto-Protect error message containing the text "Unable to initialize the Virus Scanning engine database files" may appear. This message is text-based and appears while Windows is starting. Pressing the O key for OK is the only option. Pressing the O key allows the computer to start normally. NAV becomes disabled. This appears to happen if the virus definitions do not match the other Norton files. This can be caused by using System Restore within Microsoft® Windows® Me to restore a date before a Live Update.

RESOLUTION: Perform the following steps to download and run the Symantec Hawkings tool.

Note: This is the preferred resolution if Internet access is available:

Note: These instructions assume that Netscape or Internet Explorer is the browser being used. If America Online (AOL) is the Internet service provider (ISP) being used, minimize AOL, and then open Internet Explorer.

Normally, NAV Auto-Protect is disabled if this issue occurs. If Auto-Protect is disabled, continue with step 2, and in the system tray by the clock, a red X appears over the icon for Auto-Protect. If Auto-Protect is enabled, disable Auto-protect. Steps to disable Auto-Protect:

a.       In the system tray by the clock, double-click the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect icon.

In the Norton AntiVirus window, double-click Real Time Scanning (Auto-Protect).

In the System Status Details window, click Yes to disable Auto-Protect.

Close the Norton AntiVirus window.

Connect to the Internet.

In the Address or Location box of the Web browser, type: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/winme/HawkingTool.exe. Press the ENTER key.

In the File Download dialog box, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

In the Save As dialog box, click the Save In list, and then click Desktop.

In the Save As dialog box, click Save.

In the Download Complete dialog box, click Close.

Next to the Start button in the Quick Launch area, click the Show Desktop icon.

On the desktop, double-click HawkingTool.exe.

The HawkingTool should launch LiveUpdate automatically. If LiveUpdate does not launch, from the Start menu, point to Programs, Norton AntiVirus, and then click LiveUpdate - Norton AntiVirus.

In the LiveUpdate dialog box, click Next.

The LiveUpdate dialog box displays a list of updates. Click Next. The updates download.

1.      In the Please Read dialog box, click OK.

2.      In the LiveUpdate dialog box, click Finish to complete the installation of the updates.

3.      In the Reboot Required dialog box, click OK.

4.      The live update process may have to be repeated a couple of times to bring the Norton AntiVirus program up to the latest version. The Norton AntiVirus program updates incrementally.

If Internet access is not available, use the following steps.

1.      Normally, NAV Auto-Protect is disabled if this issue occurs. If Auto-Protect is disabled, continue with step 2, and in the system tray by the clock, a red X appears over the icon for Auto-Protect. If Auto-Protect is enabled, disable Auto-protect. Steps to disable Auto-Protect:

a.       In the system tray by the clock, double-click the Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect icon.

b.      In the Norton AntiVirus window, double-click Real Time Scanning (Auto-Protect).

c.       In the System Status Details window, click Yes to disable Auto-Protect.

d.      Close the Norton AntiVirus window.

Note: If the computer does not start in normal mode, start the computer in Safe mode, disable Auto-protect, restart in normal mode, and then continue troubleshooting.

6.      In the Exploring - C:\ window, in the left pane, click to open the VirusDefs folder.

7.      In the Exploring - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs window, in the right pane, locate the numbered folders. They look similar to the following.

8.      Click to select each folder one at a time, and then press the DELETE key on the keyboard to delete all of the numbered folders. Do not delete any of the other folders.

9.      From the File menu, click Close.

g.       In the white pane at the bottom of the Find: Livetri.zip window, click to select each file one at a time, and then press the DELETE key on the keyboard to delete each file that starts with Livetri.zip. There should not be any other files listed.

h.       In the Find: Livetri.zip window, in the Named text box type: Settings.Liveupdate. Click Find Now.

i.         In the white pane at the bottom of the Find: Settings.Liveupdate window, click to select each file one at a time, and then press the DELETE key on the keyboard to delete each file that starts with Settings.Liveupdate. There should not be any other files listed.

11.  Place the Application Restoration CD in the CD-ROM drive tray.

12.  In the yellow box next to the Cow Box, click OK.

13.  Update NAV from the System Restoration Kit.

e.       In the System Restoration Kit window, click Manual.

f.        In the System Restoration Kit window, on the Reinstall tab or on the Software tab, depending on the version, click Norton 2001 update or click Norton 2000 update.

g.       In the System Restoration Kit window, click Install.

h.       In the SARC Intelegent Updater, click Yes.
