MORE INFORMATION
In Windows XP, the USB core stack supports
the "Selective Suspend" feature. A driver can use this feature to turn off the
USB device it controls when the device becomes idle, even while the computer
remains in a fully operational power state (S0). For example, a driver can idle
the host controller, empty USB hubs (including the root hub), and the full range
of USB devices that are supported by the operating system. Selective suspend is
primarily intended to conserve battery power in laptop computers. USB
controllers often use a lot of battery power, even when no devices are attached
to the computer
USB Printers & other devices causing long
delay in boot
Problem : If After connecting
Printer or any usb device to computer, it takes unusually long to boot (about 4
to 5 minutes), and when the device is disconnected the system runs fine, it is
not a hardware problem. or usb port error. (tried on a system on one page bios)
This might specially occur when the usb keyboard is present
and a multi function HP or Lexmark printer is present or when a USB memory key
is in the system (dell 16 MB memory)
Description : The system is attempting to boot thro the usb device hence
causing the delay. It would attempt to boot thro that usb device, mainly using
some multi function HP or Lexmark printers.
Solution : Enter Setup and under Integrated Devices, under USB emulation
(Or Legacy USB) choose option "disabled". This should resolve the issue.

Viewing USB devices and confirming USB
port functions in Win98
When working with Windows 98
there is an easy way to tell if an USB device is being detected by the operating
system and the USB ports are functional. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the drive
and go to the following folder Tools>Reskit>Diagnose and then run usbview.exe.
This will open a window like Device Manager but will also have USB devices
displayed. You can now click on the device and get information about the device.
If the device is connected, powered on and shown in USB View, then disconnect
the USB cable from the system and refresh the USB View window by closing and
re-opening USB View as above. The device should no longer be seen here. This
verifies that Windows sees when the device is connected and the USB ports are
functional.
In newer versions of Windows
this information can be accessed in Device Manager normally.
