Set in a suburban high school, circa 1980, the show follows the realistic, funny and often touching lives of two teenage siblings who are trying to get through high school and figure out their place in the world.

For high school sophomore Lindsay Weir, life has just become more complicated.  Jolted by the death of her grandmother, she has found herself unsure of the life plan she once though was so certain.  Her old goals of college and career now seem unimportant and she is being driven away from her old "brainy" friends and into the lives of the "freaks," the only other people in the school who do not accept the status quo.

Her younger brother, Sam, faces his own challenges in his new life as a high school freshman.  He has arrived at high school far less mature - both physically and mentally - than most kids his age.  Adding to his grief is an obsessive bully and an unrequited love for an unattainable cheerleader.  Buoyed by the common tribulations being faced by his friends, including Neil, a confident, sci-fi loving geek, and Bill, a tall geek who looks smart, but really isn't, Sam navigates his way through the daily trials of high school life.

The series also includes Daniel, a friendly, but slightly dangerous freak who has taken a liking to Lindsay; Nick, a tall freak who dreams of stardom as a rock-and-roll drummer; Ken, an acerbic and rebellious freak; Kim , Daniel's unpredictable girlfriend who is not about to let Lindsay join their group, and Sam and Lindsay's overbearing parents Jean and Harold.
