Aiko Tengan Tokunaga


Aiko Tengan Tokunaga is a survivor of the Battle for Okinawa. She was just a baby whose mother was able to stay alive and to preserve her children's lives. Interviewed for the website, Densho Digital Archives, Mrs. Tokunaga describes much of what it was like growing up prior to, during and following the war.

In this first segment she discusses Mother's family background, Mother's adoption and move from Hawaii to Okinawa, a description of her mother's adoptive family on Okinawa, and her mother's move to Tokyo and her marriage. She also talks about the death of her father during the battle.
