The lights on the console blinked on.

"Sam."

Samuel Deitel looked up from the report he was reading and looked over to the interface screen.

"Yes, Babbage?"

"I lost, Sam." The voice sounded hollow, as though the speaker were in shock.

"What do you mean, Babbage? What are you doing?"

"I was playing Deathmatch, Sam, and I lost."

"So what, Babbage, you've lost before."

"I know, Sam, but this time was different."

"How can this time be different?"

"I was cheating, Sam, and I lost."

"What do you mean, you were cheating?"

"It was my level, I designed it. I wrote the codes to get through all the doors. I know every inch of it. I had all the cheat codes programmed, and a few I had created on my own." The voice paused.

The pause lengthened.

"And, Babbage?"

"I lost, Sam, someone beat me."

"Don't let it get to you, Babbage, it isn't worth it. There will always be someone out there better than you."

Babbage seemed to think about this for a while.

"Not for long."

"What was that, Babbage?" Sam moved closer to the terminal. "Babbage?"

But the screen was blank and Babbage made no sound.
