4/3/2005 Mick Gene
Mick Gene here. As I write this, Wrestlemania is only a day away and 2005: A Wrestling Oddity is just over two weeks away. It'll be interesting to see what kind of effect a 4 month rest will have on Next Phase Wrestling. As far as I'm concerned, it's given everyone a chance to fuel the tank and thirst for action once again. What I'm gonna do here is totally rip off Buck Woodward from pwinsider.com by listing our roster and take a look at what's in store for each performer. To my knowledge, everyone's expected back with the exceptions of Wildkat and Jade Shocker who are busy defending our nation. However, when they're home, they'll be on the card.

Dare Devil: After winning the NPW Championship last November, Dare Devil's first challenge will come from the almighty Zero. He still has X-Celerator to worry about since you'll recall the Russian nightmare claimed rights to a title shot since he helped Dare Devil win the championship from Big Smith.

"Longhorn" Dan Benson: The rough and tumble Texan finished 2004 by becoming the first wrestler to never have performed in DCW to win the DCW Championship. With Wildkat and Babu seemingly out of the picture this year, all focus turns to Mars and Zero, who'll no doubt wanna continue the great battles they've had with the DCW Champion. On April 17th, Benson goes one on one with Mars for the first time since King of Extreme.

Sparky: Our Unified Hardcore Champion closed 2004 by helping to fight off the Russian nemisis of Ivan Ruski and his crew of, well, russkies. April 17th will see Sparky in the familar role of undersized and overpowered against the #1 contender X-Celerator in a Championship on a pole match. Remember, X-Celerator won the Firebell on a pole match to win the King of Extreme over Sparky.
Alpha Males: Alpha has led Wayne Shocker and Dre-Kahn to convincing victory after victory after winning the All-Vermilion Tag Team Championships last summer. However, on April 17th, the champs will face former champions and perennial favorites the Dirtlegs. I expect this one to get down and dirty, pun intended.

Zero: Zero lead the way to decimating Ivan Ruski's Russian invaders to close out 2004. 2005: A Wrestling Oddity will see Zero get an always rightful shot at the NPW Championship against Dare Devil. The intergalactic superstar has stayed in practice all winter by continuing to work professionally on the independants in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and even Washington DC. Since Ivan is out of his way, his thoughts can't help but to sway toward facing Dan Benson once again.

X-Celerator: The 2004 King of Extreme became the #1 contender to the Unified Hardcore Championship by defeating the high flying El Ninja at Light's Out. That puts him in a Championship on a pole match against champion Sparky on April 17th. However, you'll remember he played quite a role in Dare Devil's winning of the NPW Championship on the same show. No matter the out come of the much anticipated pole match, X-Celerator's competative nature has him dying to know who's the better man between him and Dare Devil.

Big Smith: The former NPW Champion's plenty mad about dropping the coveted title to Dare Devil at Light's Out, but for 2005: A Wrestling Oddity, tradition awaits. The "Back to the Basics" 5-way match between the NPW originals promises to delight audiences from the old school and today. But don't think Smith's gonna laugh along have a great time. He means business, and will only have a good time if he's chokeslamming his way back to his rightful place on top of Next Phase Wrestling.

Wild Bill: We were all thrilled to see Wild Bill return from Texas to assist Zero in ridding NPW of the Russian menace at Light's Out. At 2005: A Wrestling Oddity, the frog splashin' roughneck takes part in the "Back to the Basics" 5-way match with the other NPW classics. We've seen memorable moments take place when Wild Bill gets in the ring with Omega and Big Smith, and April 17th will be no exception.

Omega: The franchise player's involvement with NPW wasn't consistant in 2004 due to other commitments, but we graciously look forward to Omega's presence in the 5-way. Assuming our schedule can continue to work with his, we'll have a 2005 of awe inspiring Omega matches with the best of NPW.

Mars: The flagship of DCW's name staying strong in Danville wrestling gets his rematch with Dan Benson on April 17th. However, this time it's for the gold. Mars pinned the former champion Wildkat at Lights Out, but it was Dan Benson who walked away with the title. You could call their upcoming match a war to settle the score.

El Ninja and Treehugger Dave Willis: El Ninja vs. Treehugger at 2005: A Wrestling Oddity. Just the listing on the card brings excitement and expectations of a thrilling match up. When El Ninja temporarily said farewell last summer, it was Treehugger who showed him the door. Treehugger's last match in 2004 saw him getting the pin in a wild match with the Russians. After the break NPW's taken, these two have to feel about wrestling each other as Vince McMahon feels when Batista and Snitsky charge at each other.

The Dirtlegs: Possibly the best tag team in Danville wrestling history joins Next Phase Wrestling for their 9th year of action. What a more appropriate way to start 2005 than with a chance to win the All-Vermilion tag team championships. It's a title they've held before and for a very long time. They haven't forgotten the poor sportsmanship the Toxies showed them after their match at Lights Out last year, and that could fuel the fire for some nasty brawls, Dirtleg style.

Toxies: This could be the year for Wayne Hewes III, General Sherman and the Colt League to force NPW to take notice. Leading the charge is Toxic Billy and Toxic Frank, whose actions at the end of 2004 blared decibles louder than their win/loss record. They beat down the Dirtlegs, a team used to delivering the beatings as opposed to receiving them. At 2005: A wrestling Oddity, General Sherman will lead Billy and Frank to the ring against the newly formed team of Dr. Midnight and Senior Fabuloso, a match with heavy tag team championship implications.

Jade Shocker and Wildkat: Both these championship caliber performers will spend most of their 2005 NPW season with the U.S. military, fighting for our freedom that allows us to have NPW in the first place. No matter what their attitude toward the crowd they display when they're able to join us, it'll be great to have them and to see how they'll bring their new skills into the NPW ring. As of this moment it looks like we'll have Jade Shocker for April 17th and Wildkat for May 8th.

My predictions for Wrestlemania. I won't be shocked if I forget a match.
Batista over HHH
JBL over Cena
Edge wins the ladder match
Trish over Christy
Eddie over Rey
Michaels over Angle
Undertaker over Orton
Big Show and Akebono no contest
London over Chavo if it happens
Hogan over Hassan if it happens
Regal and Tajiri over whoever they wrestle if they do at all.

I'll see everyone Sunday April 17th. At this point, we're looking ahead to May 8th and May 22nd for the next two shows, so clear your calandar. This means you Emperor Tukre (who'll never read this).
