For the sake of brevity I'll just give you a brief synopsis of  my movements since leaving Bothie.

I stayed at sea with Safmarine for a good while, did all my tickets and eventually after getting my Masters ticket and  literally waiting around for 'dead man's shoes' in the form  of command, I called it a day at sea in 1986. My last year at sea being as Chief Officer on the passenger ship "Astor".

I then took a secondment ashore to the ships planning  office where we planned the stowage of the containerships.  Boredom quickly set in again as it was all pretty routine and I then moved ashore permanently by taking a position in the  liner side as an Operations Co-ordinator for the multi-purpose
vessels on the Far East trade.

About a year later I was on the move again, this time into the  bulk shipping division as an Operations Manager. Another  move to Chartering (still within bulk shipping) for a while and  then back to operations to head up the team. Then in 1995  I moved back to the commercial world of Chartering again and
have essentially been in that side of the business since then.

At the end of 2000, shortly after Safmarine was split up and sold  I left to take up an offer by Island View Shipping to start an office in Cape Town. Three of us set up an office for I.V.S. in Cape Town specializing in the larger size of bulk carrier chartering and operations. We report to the head office in
Durban where the M.D. is none other than another '73 classmate,
namely Tim Mc Clure! Small world........
