I obtained 2nd Mate's in 1975 in Durban and left Unicorn shortly thereafter for Canada where I basically froze the first winter not having owned a decent sweater for many years.

I rewrote the Canadian ticket and was promptly shipped out on a small tanker going around Newfoundland in January, probably because on one else would. One does not get far in heavy ice over there but it was a good experience.

I obtained a Master Mariner in 1984 and have since been ashore with Transport Canada , including a number of years at a port on the St Lawrence north shore as Port Warden.Since then I have worked in Ottawa where I am now a Manager in Marine Safety , for Cargoes and Ship Port Interface.

I became married along the way in 1983 and have three children, I enjoy winters now and often go for a skate on the canal here during lunch.
