After getting my 2nd Mates in 1975 I joined Safmarine Capetown in their marketing department during the implementation of containerisation .

I left after 3 years to join the biggest S.A.charterer at the time Anthracite Producers Association in Johannesburg as Chartering Manager . During this time I completed my Associateship and Fellowship in Shipbroking .

In 1978 I joined Southern Chartering in Johannesburg as assistant to the general manager. This office had just been opened and we operated vessels similar to the way IVS do today.  During this time I qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London.

In 1980 Gearbulk Shipping asked me to take over their S.A office in Johannesburg as manager of marketing and chartering.  I left S.A..with Gearbulk in 1982 for Vancouver, Canada where I was also manager of marketing and chartering until 1984 when they asked us to move to Bergen, Norway and be manager of bulk chartering responsible for chartering Gearbulks fleet.

In 1986 I left Gearbulk and returned to Vancouver where I joined Maple Shipping as Chartering Manager . I left Maple in 1988 and joined Worldwide Shipping and Chartering Vancouver as Vice President and have been here ever since, for about15 years. We are shipbrokers and shipping consultants with a network of large charterers and owners worldwide.

Trine and I have been married now for 27 years and have 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. Our eldest son Brett is 25,  recently married and lives in Capetown where he is shortly finishing an economics degree at UCT. Our second eldest is 23 and acting 3rd Mate with Princess Cruises. Bjorn is 21 at college and Jesse, 17 and Maiah 14 are still in high school.

We really love living in Vancouver, which is pretty laid back and very similar to Capetown with mild weather
seldom below O degC  and incredible beauty. I have only been back to S.A.twice since leaving 20 years ago, 2 years ago I met up with Rob Whitehead and Gavin Durell, which was great.
