TELEPHONE HISTORICAL CENTRE, Old Strathcona, 10437 83 Ave

Wed. August 2, 7:00 pm

"The Telephone Rivals" - For almost 90 years, Edmonton had two rival telephone companies. Come and hear Edmonton’s two most notable historians, Alex Mair and Tony Cashman, relive some of the friendly and sometimes not so friendly rivalry that occurred during this period of the city’s history. In 1906, the "City Telephone System" was the telephone company that served Edmonton and district. Alex Taylor, a local entrepreneur, had brought two telephones to the town in 1885 and had operated his Edmonton and district telephone company for almost 20 years before he sold it to the new City of Edmonton. The new Province of Alberta decided to get into the telephone business and rented space in the downtown telephone exchange building for its first years of existence. Thus began the 90 years of rivalry between these two telephone companies. We all know the final outcome, the sale to Telus, but many interesting events happened in the intervening years. Our two historians will explore some of the interactions that occurred and their effect on the history of Edmonton. Refreshments to follow. Phone 433-1010 for more information.
