The History of Historic Edmonton Week Festival

Historic Edmonton Week Festival was founded in 1997. The festival is a week-long celebration of history immediately preceding the Edmonton Heritage Festival that brings together more than 40 agencies with an interest in heritage into a program of activities with a historical theme. Each partner contributes a program unique to its interest, facility or location, resulting in a week of tours, presentations and other activities. The Edmonton and District Historical Society coordinates this festival and, like many of the partners in heritage, is a small, not-for-profit, volunteer organization.

Historic Edmonton Week would not be possible without the partnership of more than 40 heritage and historic groups, facilities and organizations from around Edmonton. Although there are larger institutions such as the Provincial Museum of Alberta and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village involved, there are also newly formed neighbourhood groups, historic churches and small interest groups which form the backbone of the Historic Edmonton Week schedule. Most rely on volunteer labour to present their program or tour. Many have no resources to promote their heritage product and so rely on the cooperative efforts of all the partners in Historic Edmonton Week. What they do possess is the common desire to help more Edmontonians and visitors to our city learn about our history and experience our heritage in an enjoyable format.

Historic Edmonton Week will flourish and grow only with their support and the support of citizens who generously give their time and their dollars.
