Filippo Juvarra's Drawings - The coat of arms of Innocentius XI by Carlo Maratti in St Peter's
This is one of the few coats of arms of this pope one can see in Rome.
He had to follow a tight budget policy to remedy the follies of the
past. The family of Innocentius XI (Odescalchi) is still one of the
most prominent in Rome. At the end of the XVIIth century and until his death
in 1713, Carlo Maratti was the most acclaimed painter in Rome to the point
that he was asked to design the papal monument to Innocentius XI. It is uncertain to what
extent Pierre Monnot, who was actually in charge of the execution of
the monument, followed Maratti's advice, anyhow Juvarra attributed to Maratti the
coat of arms of the pope. In the background of this page the relief of the monument
showing the Liberation of Vienna which occurred in 1683, during the pontificate of Innocentius XI. The monument is located in the left nave.
