Comedy

Starring: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Viveka Davis
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Released: 18 January 2001

Does Tom Hanks ever make a bad movie?   O.K, maybe The 'Burbs, but Hanks is probably the most reliable actor in Hollywood.  His new film was a long time in the making (filming took place from January 1999 to May 2000, although filming was suspended for several months while Hanks trimmed down for the second half of filming) and, judging by the preview, the result will be yet another entertaining Hanks film.  Hanks stars as a Federal Express employee who gets marooned on a remote island and "finds himself" in the process.  The preview is big and warm and we can expect the same from the full film when it opens here in January. Dungeons and Dragons (M15+)
Adventure

Starring: Thora Birch, Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans
Director: Courtney Solomon
Released: 18 January 2001

Obviously, this is a film version of the extremely popular board game that was at its peak of popularity during the mid-1980's.   Given that it is now 2000 -- 2001 when this film is released -- it will be interesting to see just how  fans of the board game will respond to this film now that most of them will be in their late twenties/early thirties.  I guess that will depend on how good the film is and, given that most board/video games-to-big screen adaptations have resulted in awful movies, the odds are stacked against this film actually being any good..

6th_day_outthiseek.jpg (12424 bytes) The 6th Day (MA15+)
Action

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert Duvall, Tony Goldwyn
Director: Roger Spottiswoode
Released: 18 January 2001

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a man who returns home to find that he has been cloned and he soon discovers that the people who designed his clone want the real "Arnie" out of the way.  Fans of Schwarzenegger will no doubt enjoy this latest offering from the big guy, but this shapes as a typical Schwarzenegger beat-'em-up action flick; hardly anything to get excited about. Bedazzled (M15+)
Comedy

Voices of: Brendan Fraser, Elizabeth Hurley, Frances O'Connor
Directors: Nick Park and Peter Lord
Released: 7 December 2000

out this week (bedazzled).jpg (12866 bytes)

A scantily-clad Elizabeth Hurley may be the only reason to check out this light-weight comedy that is a re-make of Dudley Moore's 1967 film titled, funnily enough, Bedazzled.  Hurley stars as the Devil who grants seven wishes to the love-struck Brandon Fraser in return for his soul.  Give me a break!.  Australian Frances O'Connor also stars.
