The office of the Park was in the city of Taza.  This city was once a launching point for French Armies into Algeria because it is less than 60 miles from the border.  Like many Moroccan cities, Taza has two parts: The Old City (Taza Folk) and the new city (Taza T'het).  Taza Folk is where I shared a house with other PCVs and this part of town overlooks the rest of the valley.
The valley, called the Taza Gap, is believed to be the actual geological divide between the African and European continents.  It is here where the Rif and Atlas mountains meet.  With Fes only about 70 miles to the west, this region of Morocco has had a long history of visitors.  While Fes was the capital of Morocco, invaders from the Romans, the Arabs, and the French all passed through here as they marched from the east in their conquests of North Africa.
