All About
Our Lady of Miracles Society
1936
In 1935, A Festa was held by the Portuguese
American Club in spite of the fact that the
statue of Our Lady of Miracles had not yet
arrived, nor had the Our Lady of Miracles
Society been formed or sanctioned by the local
church. Who would have thought it would
still be going strong all these years later and go
on until the end of the century?

Manuel Souza was from the island of Sao Miguel. He
was visiting in the Azores and went to the island
of Terceira during the festa of Our Lady of Miracles.
He was so impressed at what he saw and came back here
and told his friends about it and suggested they do
the same thing here to keep the Portuguese people
together. He ordered a statue and it came into
San Francisco which he donated to the Church.

In 1937, Each group named a queen for their Festa.
In 1938, the two groups merged to form the
Our Lady of Miracles Celebration Committee.
The Queen in 1935 from the Portuguese American
Club was Amelia Mattos. In 1936, Mary Brum was
queen and in 1937, from the Portuguese American
Club, Olivia Silva was queen.
