Is it Possible?
I started making music at the age of 14, now I have my own family and is already 28 yet I continue to dream of being recognized as a musician who makes sensible music in the Philippines. To date I have already made 2 albums, one for each band I got active with. Many of my friends would say, go to Manila so that people may be able to hear your song. But I didn't heed them, not because I was afraid of something , I love my province so much and I can't bear leaving my family, my friends and my community  who nurtured  my so-called-music. At this point it would seem that if I want to reach out to
more people, I don't really have any other choice but to go to Manila and shop around for a record deal with a major label. Okey, I still got my punk devil telling  me and my band not to be a sell-out or something, but more importantly I don't really see it as a logical option for these reasons:

1. I am not sure if we will be able to cut a deal with a major label, given the kind of music we play and our    physical appearance.

2. If we ever  get signed, it is not an assurance that our record label will stick with us. Most especially if we don't get a gold record status.

3. Can we do covers during gigs since it seems like " gasgas" type of  covers are required for a band to be able to earn and buy food in Manila?

4. With the "playing covers" set-up, how can we survive as a band when we got used to playing originals and we're a bunch of lousy cover musicians?

5. Now we have stable jobs here in Leyte, and were earning  just enough to buy the things we need. In our current situation we are able to make and play the music we want without really zeroing-in if people will like our music or not because we are sure that come payday we'll have money in our pockets.

6. With our presence in Tacloban  we are able to help the music scene grow, together with the other bands.

7. I don't want to be away from my wife and my baby.

However, I still would like to reach out to more Filipinos  without going to Manila. So the question now is

"Is it possible?".
I know that it is not only me who is weaving these things in my mind, somewhere out there a guy in Palawan is thinking the same way, or in Ilokos, Dagupan, Tarlac, Masbate, Jolo...or a Filipino artist  in America denied of "white recognition" .

If we can make a network of Filipinos involved in indie recording, publication etc..., then it is possible to reach out to more people. For example my band's followers here in Leyte will be able to appreciate MOYG's music (They are releasing their album independently) if only they are given the opportunity to listen to the band. In the process MOYG will not be constricted to their Manila audience alone, they can now have followers  from Leyte. If my band will have a contact in Vigan, then it will be possible for us to have a gig there and sell  our stuff. Conversely she/he can do the same here in Leyte.
I have been dreaming of this since I was a teen-ager, I just didn't know how to approach it. With the net, I think this is possible now. If you want to be part of this network please mail me. I don't care what you do as long as are involved in the underground music scene in your area, I would be very glad if you if you join me. Madamo nga Salamat.
