Cheap is such an ugly word -- it implies poor quality. The Signet Classic Editions could never be called low quality, yet they are quite inexpensive. And Amazon Books discounts them further. If you are looking for single plays in book form, these are perfect. Each volume contains an informative essay on the Elizabethan theatre. Each volume has information on Shakespeare's source for the play, and some volumes include selections from the source. There are two or more informative essays. In addition, almost all the volumes contain an essay on the play on stage and screen. They are complete and annotated editions. There are many revised editions published in 1998. The new editions include a page with an illustration of the title page from one of the early folios. If you try these, I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I have. I used these in graduate school and my children have used them at the high school level. The additional information makes an excellent resource for a paper on the play. The Signet Paperback Editions are perfect for students or pleasure readers. Each book contains an essay on the Elizabethan Theatre, annotated, unabridged text and at least two (sometimes more) interesting essays describing Shakespeare's sources for each play, criticism, and an essay on the play on stage and film. They are well priced and Amazon Books discounts them further. To save space, the editions are categorized by their location (I borrowed this from Asimov). We have the Greek, the Roman, the Italian and the English [Scotland and Denmark] locations. The index listed below will help you if you are not familiar with the play's locations.
