Dufus & Shirt...

…Meet the Good, the Bad, the Beauty and the Ugly

The Punch Middle were having another signing (see D...Tries For a Post in UNIT), this time including "Archers'" star, and three-time Davros, Terry Molloy. The addition of Tom (GOD) and Nicola Bryant (oh and Anthony Ainley was there as well, but our friends had already met him twice) meant that a trip was mooted. Taking place on a Thursday, both Lupine and Enigma were working. Chalky although simply lounging about the house (being a lazy teacher), refused to attend as it was not specified what needed to be purchased for entry, but gave Dufus and Shirt items to take nevertheless. Dufus and Shirt had no such compunctions, and being skiving from work and "writing their dissertation" respectively, and having read that qualifying items began at £7.95, decided to undertake the jaunt to Charing Cross. Meeting at their local station at 9.30 to enable Dufus to buy a one-day travelcard, our friends found themselves running for a train to Clapham Junction (Dufus' running is a sight to avoid). Changing at Clapham Junction, they found themselves surrounded on all sides by men in Panama hats (having forgotten that the latest cricket Test Match began at the Oval in just half-an-hour).

Reaching the Punch Middle half-an-hour before the signing was due to start, they joined the reasonably lengthy queue. In order to pass the time, Dufus decided to closely stare at any approaching taxi or limousine, in case it contained a WHO luminary. This proved fruitful when the lovely Ms. Bryant arrived in a posh car, and spent over a minute trying to convince the man on the door that she was one of the celebrities (well the pictures on the First Day Cover she was promoting were fifteen years old). It was also whilst standing in the queue that they spotted ORAC from their local group, who spoke briefly to them before giving them each an old copy of "Celestial Toyroom". They also completed a mailing list form with their birthdays, due to being promised that they might get a birthday card from a Dalek. Shirt was also asked by a passing American tourist what everyone was queuing for. "It's people from Doctor Who". "Is that an author?" "No, an old British TV programme!". The tourist left, not much enlightened.

A mere ten minutes after the signing was due to begin, the queue started moving. As ever, when they reached the front of the queue, they were stopped by a member of staff, who bizarrely recognised Shirt despite the fact that Shirt had never met him before (maybe he was watching last month's "Crimewatch"). Dufus getting bored, peered into the shop, and asked "Is that Nicola Bryant ?", before pausing and answering his own question, " No, it's just some woman!". Shirt following his gaze, chided him, saying "it IS Nicola, and she will never be JUST SOME WOMAN!". Dufus then decided to keep quiet.

Finally they were ushered into the shop, and offered a choice of First Day Covers @ £37.50/£12.50 or Prints of Tom for £15. Shirt then proceeded to embarrass Dufus by arguing with the man behind the counter, producing an advert in DWM as proof that it had been advertised that qualifying items started at £7.95. The man then gave in and allowed Shirt to buy 3 floating pens and a "Bagpuss" bookmark to gain entry. Dufus playing more by the rules bought a pack of greetings cards in addition to the pens (and was excited to find 5 cards inside rather than the promised 4). Just past the till, was the exquisite Nicola, who happily signed not only the covers brought by Dufus and Shirt but the "Attack of the Cybermen" cover given to the pair by Chalky for Terry Molloy, which ended up being more inscribed than signed due to the rubbishness of the pen Nicola was provided with. The queue had stopped by Ms. Bryant, and so the two of them chatted to her about the plethora of WHO merchandise available, in particular the "Who Is Dr. Who" CD that she had seen for the first time that morning. Shirt explained it featured WHO stars singing, and was very diplomatic about Mr. Hines' efforts. "Can I have a picture?", Dufus asked. "Certainly", the angel in human form replied, "I'll just lean over this cabinet, so you can get close". "That's the best offer, I've had in ages", said Dufus. "What do you mean 'in ages'", Shirt retorted, "it's the best offer you've ever had or will have!". Shirt pointed Dufus' camera towards Nicola, and Dufus leaned in towards her leaning on a glass cabinet, producing a worrying cracking sound, causing Shirt to be concerned that Dufus was about to ruin hundreds-of-pounds'-worth of rare stamps. However, the cabinet held, and the two swapped, and Shirt got his photo with the object of his lust.

The Deity, or Tom, was next. Dufus got three of his covers signed by the great man. Signing Dufus' "Destiny of the Daleks", Tom asked "Who's that woman?". Shirt resisted the temptation to answer, "It's Lalla Ward, you were married to her", whilst Dufus identified the Movellan as Suzanne Danielle. Shirt then got three of his covers signed, as well as his "Eighties" book, and the two moved on to the masterly Anthony Ainley. Dufus offered Ant, the inlay from "Destiny of the Doctors" (the CD-ROM game, which Mr. Ainley had previously identified as his favourite story). "I've never managed to complete it", said Dufus. "Well", said Ant, "you can have hours of fun just playing with it!". Shirt at this point managed to stifle the giggles elicited by this double-entendre, and offered Ant two video covers. The usual conversation of where Shirt had come from, and then if he knew Servalan, who apparently was going to be attending later with her mother, then occurred.

The final guest was the one that the two friends had come for. Dufus was first to meet the creator of the Daleks (who Shirt was hoping was more intelligent than a certain other creator of the Daleks, see CDS..Meet A Blue Peter Badge Winner). The first cover that he offered was Chalky's "Resurrection of the Daleks". "To Chalky?", asked Mr. Molloy. "No, to Dufus", answered Dufus before looking again and changing his mind, "no, to Chalky !!". Mr. Molloy looked slightly peeved at this, but signed the cover to Chalky, then four of Dufus' covers. Shirt found Mr. Molloy to be slightly downbeat (probably due to just having been exposed to the idiotic Dufus), but managed to get three of his own covers, two of Chalky's (one of which Chalky had asked to be signed as "Roy Tormelly", but Shirt decided not to ask for this, having clocked Mr. M’s current mood), and his "Eighties" book , signed by Terry.

Leaving the shop, the two were pleased at the number of signatures that they had obtained, as the advert had promised only three. Dufus was annoyed that he had not got his "Attack" cover signed by Terry Molloy, as he had mistaken it for a duplicate of his "Revelation" cover, and also that he had only just had the idea that he should have got Tom to sign the extra greetings card for Chalky’s upcoming birthday. Having found no sign of Servalan (or her mother) in the queue, the two engaged in brief jaunts to Seventh Galaxy to pick up signed copies of the latest Large Endings' release "Project Twilight" and to Notting Hill in an attempt to find cheap WHO stuff, then wended their merry ways home.
