The Polish Lowland Sheepdog  is a very old purebred breed dating back to before the 1500's and tracing their roots to shaggy sheepdogs brought by traders from Tibet hundreds of years ago. In their native Poland the breed is called the Polski Owczarek Nizinny (translating to Polish Lowland Sheepdog) and it is from this that the acronym or nick-name PON comes  from.

This hardy little worker nearly met with extinction in the early part of this century. After WW II there were only a few of this ancient herdsman left. Dr Danuta Hryniewicz, carefully gathered the few PONs that had survived the war and re-established the breed, gaining recognition in Poland and FCI by 1959. The PON is a newcomer to North America but in the few years it has been here it has quickly risen to become a favorite in the show ring and as a wonderful family companion.

The PON is a highly intelligent, extremely trainable, hardy little dog. They are being recognized here as a premier herding breed and are excelling in Agility and other doggy sports. One of the more remarkable traits is the breed's exceptional memory. They are fun loving with a great sense of humor, but as so many ancient breeds do, they can have a mind of their own and will think for themselves. You need only to look into their clever eyes and you can tell that they are figuring out something!  This means that they need  firm but fair, training, beginning at an early age.  They have been known to figure out the most amazing things and pick up on routines very quickly. With their amazing long term memory they never loose their own toys.

PONs love children and are at home with a gaggle of boisterous kids or traveling the highways with retired RVers. They adapt readily to what ever environment they are in. They enjoy working on a farm, playing in the park or lounging in the penthouse.

PONs get along very well with other animals, large and small. They are aloof with strangers until the family introduces the new person and they are a great little watchdog. Their size keeps them small enough to fit in the coziest of apartments, and sturdy enough to withstand the rough and tumble play of children.  They are the perfect size for the family that does not want a large dog, but does not want a little on either! As a house pet they are unparalleled, clean, easy to train, nearly non-shedding and odorless. The adult coat is easy to care for with occasional brushing every week.
