Strategy and Sportsmanship

If you enjoy good competition, with a healthy dose of fun, you will love curling.

Curling is a social game, that is full of strategy. It is played on special indoor ice by two teams of four players. Although it is often described as "chess on ice" for its strategy, it more closely resembles bocce or shuffleboard.

The object of the game is to get closest to a target area and maintain that advantage while your competitor tries to get closer or knock you out. The strategy comes into play with planning of shots like "guards" or "takeouts" and the ability to control the speed and direction of each shot. Ice conditions are ever changing which adds to the challenge. The matches are as social or competitive as desired, depending on the curlers' skill level and the nature of the match.

Like golf, curling enjoys a heritage of good sportsmanship and camaraderie. It is always played in good spirits. In fact, tradition dictates that the winners are responsible for buying a round of refreshments after the match.

Exercise and Recreation

Curling is Canada's #1 sport and the Washington DC area's newest Olympic sport! As with many winter sports, curling is a balance between stamina and finesse.

Like paddle tennis, curling is good exercise. The average match lasts about 2 hours with the average curler walking up to 2 miles! With vigorous "sweeping" motion required for many shots, curling is a cardiovascular workout. Since the climate is controlled on the ice, curling is a great way to stay active and feel good all winter long.

Although it requires stamina, curling is easy to learn. People of all ages enjoy the sport of curling. It is a game for life, fun for singles, couples, or the entire family. Unlike other sports, curling is very affordable and does not require expensive equipment. (And no, you don't use ice skates!)

The Potomac Curling Club offers free instruction. League play is scheduled on Monday evenings and accommodates all skill levels. You can even compete with clubs across the United States and Canada.

Social Fun and Special Events
