Major rejects criticism of UN force in Bosnia:
British Prime Minister John Major has described US criticism of the UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia-Hercegovina as "lurid and misplaced".
Major's response followed comments made by the Senate Republican leader, Robert Dole, that UN peacekeepers had failed to protect the UN designated safe area of Bihac and should be withdrawn. Dole also criticised Britain and France for blocking demands for increased NATO air strikes to stop the Serb offensive on Bihac. Major said that UN troops may have to withdraw if the warring parties continued to intensify the conflict situation.
