My Interest in the show:"Twin Peaks" is one of those show's you
either love or hate. If you like it, you really like it, and end up buying
the soundtrack CD, books (Laura's Diary, Coops book) board game, souvenirs
and even, the entire video box set. I have most of these, with a recent
purchase being the tapes, for which Kyle MacLachlan won an emmy for.
Airings : It aired on ABC Saturday nights from 1990-1991, and was nominated
for 14 Emmys (the most for any series). It only won 2, however, for Best
Editing and Best Costume Design. It also won 3 Golden Globes, for Best
Dramatic Series, Best Dramatic Actor (MacLachlan) and Best Supporting
Actress (Piper Laurie, who plays Catherine Martell). As an Australian, I
didn't catch it on ABC but after late-night TV viewings and then watching
the entire series again on Video, I was hooked.
Synopsis : Many begun watching "Twin Peaks" thinking it was
just another soap opera or mystery show, boy did they get a surprise. The
main plot concerns an FBI agent, Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan),
who travels to the small, sleepy Washington State town of Twin Peaks to
figure out the homicide of the homecoming queen, Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).
Palmer's body was found Wrapped in Plastic on a river bank. Your first
impression is why would anyone want to hurt this innocent little Prom Queen?
we'll, for a start, she isn't exactly innocent. She is a bit of a
"loose cannon" actually stringing along several guys and mixing in
what you would call "the wrong crowd". Agent Cooper begins working
with the Local Sherrif Office in finding out who murdered the teen.
"Twin Peaks" isn't so sleepy, it becomes evident that not only is
this no ordinary murder, but that the rest of Twin Peaks is just crawling
with deep dark secrets. So who did I enjoy the most? I guess Dale Cooper was
a fine fed. He was so serious but yet an all time great TV mystery solver.
Kyle MacLachlan nailed the character on the head.
Why was it Cancelled? "Twin Peaks" ran for two seasons. There
are a number of reasons why it was cancelled. This includes "Media
Overkill", meaning that the critics loved it, but audiences didn't join
them in the feeling. You needed to watch "Twin Peaks" every week
too, you couldn't just watch an episode now and then, if you missed an
episode you would be confused as to what was going on. The scheduling of the
show didn't help either, it's timeslot was constantly changing. People got a
bit ticked off with the fact that it took ages to find out who Laura
Palmer's killer was. The Supernatural/Sci/fic element kind of turned people
off too, can you believe it has even been reffered to as a
"Cop-Out". The funny thing is ever since TP there has been a slew
of similiar shows, including Northern Exposure and The X Files.
The Episodes -The Two Hour Pilot - 1st season (7 eps) - 2nd season (22
eps) = 32 Hours The European Pilot is different to the pilot most U.S people
saw, this is because Lynch sold it to Europe before the show aired. They
actually showed it as a movie overseas. Actually, you get to find out who
the killer is, in this pilot. There are a lot of different scenes too, so if
you can get hold of it, do it.
The Year It's Set Is.. The dates in the pilot and series correspond to
events in 1989, however the book "The Secret Diary of Laura
Palmer" places the action in 1990. But in "FWWM", the events
are once again set in 1989. Laura apparently died about 4am, 24th Feb, says
Doc Hayward.
Where is Twin Peaks? This is a good question, because just about everyone
wants to go there, including myself. It's supposed to be somewhere South of
Washington. The show was filmed in Snoqualmie, Washington. The waterfall is
there; the Great Northern Hotel is really the Salish Lodge (although it
doesn't look like the GNH on the inside--the interiors of both the GNH and
the Packard/Martell home were filmed in the Kiana Lodge); and the RR Diner
is really the Mar-T Cafe.
Bob Bob's the bad-ass spirit of the series, and there is no real
explanation of who he is. It is believes he feeds on emotions. Albert once
said "Bob is the evil that men do". Others have said he is just a
figment of Bob and Laura's imagination. Through the darkness of future past
the magician longs to see one chance out between two worlds 'Fire walk with
me.'
David Lynch (Writer/Director/ "FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon
Cole") "We were at Du Par's, the coffee shop at the corner of
Laurel Canyon and Ventura and all of a sudden, Mark Frost and I had this
image of a body wrapped in plastic washing up on the shore of a lake."
"I love the world of Twin Peaks. It has its own rules, and its mood,
and its way of being...." "Twin Peaks is about entering a world,
falling in love with it, working within it, and letting it talk to you. To
me, if it doesn't have honesty, and you don't obey those rules, then it
won't work, it won't feel good, and the audience won't stay with it. That's
also true of painting, or any movie."
Mark Frost (Co-Writer) "We drew a map. We started with the image of
a body washing up on lake. We knew the town had a lumber mill at the
specifics we weren't sure of."
Kyle MacLachlan (Special Agent Dale Cooper) "I see my character as
Jeffrey Beaumont (whom he played in Blue Velvet) grown up. Instead of being
acted upon, he has command on the world."
