There is many ways to play Tribes 2.  You want to find the best one for you.  Most common is Capture the Flag.  So when you play online, you'll be seeing lots of it.  To get to the point, your types of games are:

Bounty: Everyone for himself competition. You only pursue one target at a time. You can only go after a new target if you eliminate the current target.  Your penalized if you kill other players who are not your "bounty" (innocent bystanders) except the player hunting you.

Capture and Hold (Cnh): Teams capture a number of objectives, usually found in towers.  Once an objective has been captured, all assets belong to you (Stations and turrets).  Your team receives points for the time the objective is in your control.

Capture the Flag (CTF): Your main objective is to capture "cap" your enemy's flag while protecting your own.  To capture your enemy's flag, just run into it.  Make sure you do because I had some bad encounters with turrets when I missed the flag.  Then when you do capture the enemy's flag, return to your base immediately and run into your flag.

Deathmatch (DM): Your main objective is to kill anyone and everyone you see.  A good no-holds-bar brawl between players.  Show no mercy.  The victor is the one with the most kills at the end of the match.

Hunters: This is a cross between CTF and Deathmatch.  You kill everyone you see but when you kill someone, they drop a flag.  You want to collect the flags and bring them to a waypoint on the map.  Here's a hint, do not carry 20 flags at one because when you die, they're all gone.  The victor is the one with the most points.

Team Hunters: Exactly like Hunters but you work as a team.

Rabbit: In this game, only a single flag exists.  Whoever takes the flag, everyone is after.  The longer you keep it, the more points you get.

Siege: Also called Attack and Defend.  One team attacks another team's base to get to a waypoint.  When the time runs out or the attackers control the base, they switch up meaning the attackers are the defenders and the defenders become the attackers.
