Strathclyde Police 81 Linwood 31

Linwood discovered how difficult the coming season is going to be in this training match, played over four twenty-minute periods, against future National League Division 5 opponents, Strathclyde Police.

The Police opened the scoring almost immediately when following a knock-on from the kick-off, they broke away quickly from the subsequent scrum to score in under a minute. Shell-shocked Linwood conceded two more tries before they started to impose themselves during the first quarter and when they did they found themselves pulling some points back thanks to a Colin McCauley try following a Kevin Rees kick-on.

The Police started the second quarter the strongest team and once again ran in three tries before Linwood, through Colin Guinea pulled one back following some forward interpassing in the opposition 22.

The third quarter was Linwood’s strongest with Colin McCauley and Gordon Martin both scoring tries, although the Police outfired them again with three tries.

Apart from McCauley scoring again to claim his hatrick, the fourth quarter is one Linwood would prefer to forget as poor discipline and fitness allowed the Police to run in four tries in reply.

Walker converted three of Linwood five tries, giving what should have been a respectable points total of thirty-one points, but the Police’s superior total of 81 shows just how much Linwood will have to do to stay up this season.

Linwood have one more training game versus Paisley this coming Saturday before their league campaign starts with a home game against old rivals Hyndland.

Paisley 10 Linwood 15

Paisley and Linwood Rugby Clubs got together for their final warm-up before the BT Scotland National leagues kick off next week. At the end of a mutually enjoyable 80 minutes, it was Linwood who were the happier, after they edged home in a close game.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with Linwood having the best of things territorially but unable to turn pressure into points. Paisley then showed them how to do it with Gavin Newlands kicking one of two penalty attempts to put Paisley 3-0 up at the break.

Linwood grabbed the lead early in the second half however, with winger Gordon martin running in the touch down, after a good break by No.8 Alan Docherty, to put his side 5-3 up.

Linwood built on this breakthrough and a solid surge from their pack up the park saw Docherty driving over from ruck position on the Paisley line to increase the lead to 10-3.

But Paisley were not out of it and their back division showed their threat with a splendid piece of combined handling which put stand off Gavin newlands through to score, and then follow-up with a difficult touch line conversion.

With the scores at 10-10, the next score always looked like being the winner and fortunately for Linwood it was they who got it, with that man Docherty picking up at the base of a close-range scrum and driving over for Linwoods third unconverted try.

Graham Walker tries a chip over the advancing Paisley heads.

Linwood 29 Hyndland 21

Linwood started their first league season in the nationals with a win over fellow promotion winning club Hyndland. The game could have went either way but Linwood clinched it by scoring 2 more tries than Hyndland. The scorers being Full back Alan Williamson (2),second half sub Colin McAuley and second rower Fraser Hay.Graham Walker completed the 29 point score line with 3 conversions and a penalty.

Highland 106 Linwood 0

Some big boys from the Highlands and Fiji ran all over us

Loch Lomond 60 Linwood 12

In a scrappy match, Linwood had as much possession as their hosts but they just did’nt do as much with the ball they got, and trailed by three converted tries within the first 20 minutes.

Winger Gary Mclean then chased a long kick, dispossessed his opposite number and scored an unconverted try. However, a further converted try and penalty gave Loch Lomond a 31-5 half-time lead.

The home side added another try early in the second-half, but Linwood hit back when Ritchie Brown touched down after the ‘Wood pack pushed over from a five-metre scrum and Graham Walker converted to make it 36-12. Brown and hooker Stuart Montgomery then got in each other’s way and a golden try opportunity was lost, leaving Lomond to turn the screw, adding four more tries, two of which were converted, to complete the scoring.

Linwood 05 Bishopton 15

In this game of two halfs, Bishopton had Linwood under the cosh in the first 40, thanks to a strong wind behind them. Linwood defended stoutly and were sickened when after 35 minutes Bishopton opened the scoring with a try, following the Bishopton touch judge not flagging a obvious foot in touch by a Bishopton player. The try was converted, and Bishopton grabbed another three points before half-time , through a penalty.

With the wind behind them, Linwood dominated in the second-half, but an totally abysmal lineout performance meant they could not take advantage of it. Instead Linwood let a poor Bishopton side score another try against the run of play to take a 15-0 lead.

Linwood then started to turn the screw as the Bishopton players dropped like flies, and eventually full back Alan Williamson scored thanks to a Gordon Martin pass following a back’s move. Linwood kept up the pressure, but it was not to be.
The score line would have been very different if Linwood could just win a friggin Line out!

Linwood 17 Lenzie 57

Another heavy defeat for Linwood en route to the bottom of the division by one of the favourites for Promotion, Lenzie. Linwood tries scored by Ian Young (2) and Little Kryten.

19/10/02
Newton Stewart 96 Linwood 5

Yet another league cuffing for Linwood which was the result of only 10 Linwood players making the trip South to play Newton Stewart. The many twats that didn't make the effort should be ashamed of themselves. Newton Stewart gave us 3 players and we ended the game with 12 players after losing players through injury. The single Linwood try was scored by Gary McLean. Its Tempting to name the players who gave shite excuses and didn't show up.

Bishopton 13 Linwood 27

Levels hoisted themselves level on points with Bishopton at the foot of the table with this vital derby win. Bishopton struck first at Holmpark going in front via an Alan Lees penalty goal which was quickly answered in kind by ‘Wood’s Graham Walker.

Linwood then went in front when from a rehearsed penalty ploy Scott Young crashed through the Bishopton defence to touch down between the posts and leave Walker with a simple conversion. But Bishopton quickly showed they too had penetrative penalty ploys in their arsenal with David Jackson crashing over, but the conversion was missed.

The visitors came back into when with a short range line out possession the Linwood pack trundled over the line and collapsed in a heap. The referee awarded the try with Stuart Montgomery and Stuart Ross still arguing over which one of them deserves credit for the score. The try went unconverted.

Linwood’s third try was started and finished by Alan Williamson. He took a quick throw-in, received in back and attacked. The ball then went through three other pairs of hands before Williamson popped up again for the final sprint along the touch line into the in-goal area, his try making the half-time score 20-10 to the visitors.

Williamson completed Linwood’s scoring with the crucial fourth try early in the second half. Kevin Rees began the move when he gathered a poor Bishopton clearance kick. He released Williamson who dummied the Bishopton cover whilst sprinting 30 metres to touch down between the posts. Walker converted, and the try earned Linwood a bonus point.

Bishopton had most of the territory over the final half hour, but Linwood defended superbly and the home team managed only one breakthrough, their pack rucking and driving over for Jackson to touch down in the corner for his second try which was unconverted.

28/09/02
Marr 78 Linwood 5

Marr won this one easily, with the scoreline telling the story. Scott Young’s second half try was a pure belter, though, as he burst through 4 tackles to score between the posts. Walker missed the conversion. Marr were already 33-0 up when Young scored and his try failed to ignite a Linwood fight back.

05/04/03
Paisley 31 Linwood 32

Linwood top and tailed their season with victories over Paisley following this friendly played over four quarters at Anchor. Linwood struck first in the opening quarter when Alan Docherty picked up at the base of the scrum, side-stepped the first tackler, broke through the second challenge, then when halted had support from Kevin Rees who drove the Doc over the line for an unconverted try. Paisley recovered quickly and a Michale Sommerville try converted by Gavin Newlands put them 7-5 ahead. However, the advantage swung back to Linwood before the first break. Scott Young headed for the safety of his pack on a three-quarter move, breaking a tackle then shipping the ball to Huw Rees, who made ground before returning the ball for Young, on the loop, to run in a second unconverted try for the visitors.

Linwood stretched their advantage at the start of the second quarter with full back Alan Williamson joining the line and drawing the Paisley winger and full back before releasing winger Gordon martin to score Linwood’s third unconverted try to lead 15-7. Before the next break Paisley got themselves back into the game with another converted try. Stuart Blaikie got the touch down with Newlands converting.

After the resumption Linwood made the better start, with a rehearsed penalty move working perfectly as Scott Young powered between the posts allowing Graham Walker to kick his first successful conversion and put Linwood 22-14 ahead. Paisley again hit back with their third converted try. Ally McKechnie going over this time, Newlands adding the conversion and bringing them back to within one point. But once more the pendulum swung Linwood’s way and the Linwood backs combined to send Scott Young over for his hat-trick try, converted by Walker to make it 29-21 to Linwood. A Chris Lyall try, converted by Newlands brought it back to 29-28.

With two minutes to go Newlands converted a penalty to put Paisley in the lead, but Walker’s penalty one minute later creeped over the bar to give Linwood a narrow one point victory.
