LINWOOD 21 SHAWLANDS 5

Linwood got their season off to a winning start with this 21-5 friendly win against Shawlands. A makeshift Linwood team found themselves pinned back by the wind and some accurate kicking in the opening stages of the game. However, they eventually took the lead when a re-cycled ruck ball found props Huw Rees and Tom Andrews loitering without intent on the wing. Rees passed on to allow Andrews to go over for a try. Docherty converted.

Shawlands hit back just before half time with an unconverted try when their scrum-half ran onto an overthrown line-out feed and touched down before Linwood could close the gaps.

Linwood took charge in the second half however, and tries from Colin Guinea and sean Moore both came from rolling mauls. Docherty converted twice making the final score 21-5.

LINWOOD 0 St. ANDREWS UNI 29

The match certainly did not go to plan for Linwood when they took on the students of St. Andrews University in the BT Cellnet Scottish Cup. Far from returning from their summer break out of condition, the students had come back early to train. This preparation was obvious in the first ten minutes, as St. Andrew's sprinted into a 12-0 lead, with two tries, one converted. Linwood did come back but they were unable to break through and at the intervals the visitors still led 12-0

The students again trapped well after the break, scoring a further three tries, converting one, and Linwood knew their first exposure to the Scottish Cup was going to end in failure. With the link between forwards and backs failing, Linwood never looked like getting close to their conquerors and the match ended as a clear case of the better side winning.

GREENOCK 2nd XV 12 LINWOOD XV 10

The short trip to Fort Matilda was the ideal international morning outing for Linwood, apart from the result of course, which was a bit boggin.

Things started well for the visitors with centre Ian Young breaching the gain line from a pre-planned short penalty move and going on to touch down for an unconverted try.

Back came Wanderers however, and off scrummage ball they got over to level terms.

However, with half time looming Linwood restored their lead when Ross Armstrong peeled away from a close range scrum to crash over for his first try for the club.

Leading 10-5 at the interval, Linwood looked to build on their advantage after the turnaround, but Wanderers were in no mood to let their visitors away with the spoils and a good forward drive provided the platform for a try that was converted to give the home team victory.

STRATHCLYDE UNIVERSITY 17 LINWOOD 22

Linwood battled back from behind to win this league match at Stepps. The students started well and a chip and chase move saw Strathclydes winger Hugh McQuarrie open the scoring with a try which he then converted.

Back came Linwood however and following good forward pressure, Stuart Montgomery broke away from a maul following a lineout and bounced over the line for an unconverted try, making the half time score 7-5 to the University.

At the start of the second half the students scored and identical try to their first, with a second punt and chase getting McQuarrie onto the scoresheet for the second time. That try was unconverted, as was the Linwood response, which saw Linwood scrum half Colin Guinea dart round the side of an advancing scrum.

The Uni's McQuarrie then got his hattrick, when he touched down at the end of a move which saw the Uni's backs take the ball all the way from one end of the pitch to the other, after some confusion when Linwood looked like scoring from a 5 yard scrum.

Linwood opted throughout the game to keep the ball tight in the forwards and this paid off when Sean Moore peeled off another rolling maul to score. Walker converted that one to make it 17 all.

With Linwood's tails now up, they got the winner in the closing minutes, when after good driving by the pack, scrum half Colin Guinea pounced on a loose ball and quickly popped it from the ground to allow little centre Alan Williamson to run over unchallenged to score.

ISLE OF BUTE 17 LINWOOD 03

Slack memories along with the new testament outdid Linwood at Rothesay in this Glasgow and District League game. For they were caught out by the same piece of filthy cheating lineout piracy to help the islanders to a three tries to nil triumph. Bute got the early lead they wanted when their hooker swooped on a loose line out tap down from the Linwood line to cross for the opening try after two minutes.(The ref later admitted he was offside!)

Linwood had chances to overhaul this lead when they were offered a series of penalty chances. However, they opted to run these and could not breach some tight Bute tackling, so late in the first half they let Graham Walker kick one and he promptly put three points on the board.

The second half began like the first with Linwood forgetting what happened earlier and repeating their loose lineout delivery, with the lineout opening like the red sea to Moses, allowing the same Bute forward, Moses to steal the ball from Linwood possession and score his second try.

Linwood were never out of it entirely but some slick handling by the Bute backs created an overlap which brought a third and final try to seal the victory.

LINWOOD 2nd 17 OBAN 25

Linwoods first 2nd team league game ended badly but...

here's some pix from that game though...

Ross Armstrong and Mark Boyce both have a go at the Oban Defence.

HYNDLAND 12 LINWOOD 0

Linwood were narrowly defeated by unbeaten league leaders Hyndland in this match at Scotsoun Showground.

There was nothing between the teams in the first half, with the best opportunity falling to Linwood's winger Williamson. Unfortunately he fumbled the Guinea pass that would have put him clean through and the match remained scoreless at half time.

The opening stages of the second half were equally tight until both team's Stand Offs were sin-binned for ten minutes as the referee tried to exert his authority on a game that was becoming increasingly bad tempered. Hyndland adjusted better to this situation and soon capitalised on a Linwood handling mistake to open the scoring. The conversion was missed.

Soon after the game returned to 15-a-side another scuffle led to a prop from either side being sent to the sidelines for ten minutes and it was during this period that Hyndland scored again from a quick move off the back of a five yard scrum. This conversion was scored.

Linwood never quite got to grips with the game in the second half, and seldom looked like getting themselves back in the match. On the same day Linwood 2nds beat Birkmyre 2nds 12-0 at Birkmyre.

This week Linwood 1st XV travel to Uddingston, whilst the 2nd XV entertain Bishopton at Linwood Sports Centre. Both are league matches.

UDDINGSTON 38 LINWOOD 32

A veritable try feast in Uddingston ended with Linwood losing it rather than Uddingston winning it.Two of Uddingstons tries coming from interceptions and bringing it to 6 tries all. Uddingston secured it with 3 more conversions than Linwood managed.

Tries scored by: Ian Young(2), Duncan McKnight (2), Shug McGill, Colin Guinea

LINWOOD 20 CRAIGELEA 13

Linwood managed to scrape through this match after a scrappy first half ended with Linwoods old rivals Craigelea leading by 10 points to 7. The Linwood try Scored by young Monty. Linwood made some changes in the second half bringing Big Shug McGill on for fraser Hay at 2nd row, Doc on for Kryten at Flanker and Gary McLean on for Scott Bradley at Centre. Maybe as a result of this, Linwood dominated the 2nd half of the match with Ian Young scoring two tries for Linwood and Graham Walker missing the conversions then slotting home a difficult penalty kick after Craigelea had done likewise for 3 points at the other end.

LINWOOD 33 UDDINGSTON 39

Not much to say about this game 'cept we threw it away after leading 17-0 after 10 mins!Only to lose to an uninspired Uddingston team by 6 points for the 2nd time this season!

LINWOOD 32 STRATHCLYDE UNI 26

Linwood survived a mid-match hitch to beat the students. But the’wood feeling is that the referee did more than a bit to help the Uni side at a time when they were in danger of being overwhelmed.

The argument stems from the match official’s controversial decision to order uncontested scrums midway through the first half. Linwood spokesperson Alan Williamson explained: ‘The University informed the referee before the match that they had travelled without a competent hooker, but they did’nt tell Linwood. Then’ with our pack pushing them all over the park in the scrums the official decided on safety grounds to order uncontested scrums. Prior to his decision we were attacking them through the forwards and driving them backwards in the scrums. With uncontetsed scrums that attacking weapon was lost and our guys were not in the least happy about it’

Linwood grabbed a fifth minute lead when from a ruck ball when full-back Alan Docherty crashed over for an unconverted try in the corner.

In ten minutes it was 10-0 with a well worked try. From a scrum 30 yards out Scott Young cut back inside on a scissors move with stand-off Graham walker. After covering most of the pitch he handed the ball over to the supporting Duncan McKnight who in turn passed the ball to the rapidly ageing retired maestro Roddy Morrison and the flanker in turn involved Alan Williamson on the wing. He looped a high pass back inside to Huw Rees who released Morrison again who ,finally, crossed for another unconverted try in the corner.(sweet)

In 15 minutes Linwood got over the try line but were held up and awarded a five yard scrum. From this Duncan McKnight dived on the ball once the Linwood pack had driven the University eight over their own line. Again the conversion was missed.

Then came the uncontested scrums decision. Linwood lost the plot after this and three student tries, two of which were converted, gave Strathclyde a 19-15 interval lead.

In the second half when an obvious knock on was missed, Linwood lost it again and centre Ian Young was sin-binned for a late tackle. The penalty was advanced 20 metres for Linwood back chat and from this penalty the students crossed for another converted try to lead 26-15.

But even while Young served his ten minutes Linwood’s fightback started and Scott Young restored family and club pride when he scorched over between the posts from a set piece penalty move. Walker converted and the score sat at 22-26.

Linwood were now on top and the pack rumbled forward off a line out for hooker Stuart Montgomery to break off the rolling maul and score another unconverted try.

With their rolling mauls now clearly working, Linwood stuck with the tactic and when they advanced a line-out 30 metres from the University line into the in-goal area it was a simple matter for grandad Huw Rees to touch down for the winning try.

LINWOOD 20 BUTE 08

Linwood’s determination to get this Glasgow District Cup tie played paid off, with an well deserved victory.

‘Wood made a terrific start, winning the first line-out then rolling the subsequent maul well downfield, before flanker Billy Sweeney broke off and dived over for a try which Graham Walker converted.

But they spent the remainder of the first half pinned back in deep defence as the Bute stand off used the strong wind well to drive Linwood back with some superb line kicking. However, when Bute did try to handle they found no chinks in Linwood’s defensive shield, and only managed to pull back 3 points through a penalty, leaving Linwood 7-3 in the lead at half time.

Walker scored an early second half penalty to increase Linwood’s lead to 10-3, and a Colin Guinea try shortly afterwards extended the lead to 15-3. Bute refused to quit, however, and with five minutes to play they pulled back a try through a short range penalty making it 15-8.

However, Linwood had the final say when centre Scott Young swept outside the cover to touch down in the corner. Walker’s conversion attempt , the last kick of the match, narrowly failed.

Linwood will now play Maclaren FP in the second round at Linwood on February 23rd(shitty weather permitting).

All In lovely new shirts Ian Young manages to offload the ball to Brother and fellow Centre Scott and Shug Rees wins a groundbreaking moving Line out!

LINWOOD 03 SHAWLANDS 07

Linwood went into this Glasgow and District Cup clash knowing victory would put them into the semi-final against Uddingston. But the Glasgow and District Division2 champions showed they will be worthy Division One opponents next season(providing Linwood dont go up).

Linwood’s pack dominated the opening quarter, but, while they got over the try line on three occasions, stout defence prevented Linwood from getting the ball down. In the end Linwood players playing outrageously out of position meant they had limited attacking options from the usually vibrant back line. This was on display the whole 80 minutes

Maclaren then started to take over and Linwood’s defence was put to the test. The breaking point came after Linwood centre Scott Young took out a Maclaren player who was chasing a kick through into the in-goal area. This tackle sparked off a bit of a set to which finished with Young slotting home a texbook headbutt which floored the opposing player. The referee then Rewarded him with a Red Card! MacLaren were also awarded a Penalty try

Linwood’s remaining 14 men used the wind to good advantage in the second half. But all they had to show for massive territorial advantage was an Alan Docherty penalty.
