Mike Dewar's
Personal Profile Page.
How long have you been keeping fish.
25 years or so. It started with jill (my wife) was given a 30” tank by her sister. I said you aren't setting that smelly, tatty thing up.
She listened to every word I said & set it up anyway.
I am a senior judge with the Union of Scottish Aquarists and I specialises in Barbs, Corydoras & A.O.V Catfish.
I am also delighted to be an Honorary life member of K.A.S

What types of fish/tanks do you have & numbers of tanks.
We mainly deal with Barbs, Corydoras & Aspidoras & some small Cichlids. We have a 6'x2'x18” tank & a small 1`8” hexagon  tank that belonged to Jimmy Gilbert, these are in the sitting room & we have a small fish house holding 25 tanks. 27 in all.

What is your breeding experience,
I have been breeding Corydoras, Aspidoras & Barbs for 22 years along with other fish. I have tended towards the breeding more than the showing. I tend to leave the showing more to my wife, Jill.

What is your showing experience,
We have showed at various open shows over the years winning Classes & Best fish Trophies but not in the past 10 years due to judging commitments.
Our greatest achievment was winning the Jimmy Gilbert memorial Quaiche at Kirkcaldy this year.
Jimmy was a very close friend, his lose is hard to take & if Jill & I ever show again, we can't do any better.

Other interests outside fishkeeping. If its is another club etc, give details so we cane advertise them.
I belong to Crail Horticultural Society & have been a member since 1975
I like my garden & Dahlia's & Fuchsias are my favorite flowers.
Holidays away in our touring caravan with Jill & our two dogs & this usually includes fish tanks for “scientific research”.

Do you have any person or several persons that you admire. This can be in the hobby or family or others.
Yes, My wife Jill, We have known each other since I was 7 years old, & she holds my heart & head together, how she has done this throughout the years, I don't know.
George Kane, Not everybody's choice & we have not talked for several years, but I would like to attain half the knowledge that George has.
Derek lambert, He did so much & had so much more to give, A great loss .
Lastly Jimmy Gilbert. Jimmy was Vastly knowledgeable & a gentle person & a fantastic friend to both Jill & I, he is dearly missed.

What is your future outlook within the hobby. What are yours goals within the hobby.
The hobby is generally at a low & societies have less members than they used to but K.A.S has always been a teaching club that prides itself on helping juniors come through the breeding & showing ranks. I would like this vain to continue.
My goal would be to go on a Barb collecting/survey trip to Africa or Asia.

How long have you served on the K.A.S committee & what posts have you held in the past up to the present.
I was first on the K.A.S committee in 1986 as assistant open show manager to the late Peter Symington. I have been on & off the committee over the years holding several positions. Assistant open show manager, Open show manager, Table show coordinator, Shop manager & now Editor & I am enjoying the club as much as I did on my first day.
