Results: http://www.caq.org.au/htm/results.htm

Kin Kora Junior Chess Club had seven members contest the Hervey Bay Whale Open in late August. A great weekend was had by all and Mr Kirby and Mrs Forsyth were certainly kept on their toes. Michael Webster made his mark by being named best junior with three and a half wins, including a win over Doug Walker (1347) and a draw with Tony Hancocks (1366). Despite a shaky start, James Forsyth finished strongly with three wins to secure overall equal first place in division C of the tournament. Highlights included a 1601 win to Luke Wagner in round one, a 1470 draw to Kimberley Kirby in round four and some close contests for open first timers Joshua Foley, Colin Lynch and Jonathan Bush. Tournament winner was Biloela International Master Stephen Solomon.

Chess Association of Queensland CQ Schools Tournament

ALMOST 50 young guns put their tactical skills to the test on July 31 with Kin Kora State School's B team winning the primary school division and St Stephen's College winning the senior division of a zonal qualifier of an all-Queensland chess championship.

Ten teams from Gladstone, Yeppoon, Biloela and Thangool contested the Chess Association of Queensland CQ (South) Regional Inter-school Chess Championships at the Gladstone RSL Club, the first time Queensland's chess governing body had extended the competition outside the south-east of the state.

CAQ secretary and organiser of the Gladstone tournament Ian Murray said the tournament had highlighted some outstanding chess talent and the rapidly growing nature of the sport in Central Queensland.

Individually, St Stephen's College Year 3 student Luke Wagner finished on top of the points table on a countback after finishing equal first with Gladstone State High School's Michael Webster and Rade Radovanovich, and St Stephen's College secondary student James Forsyth.

James had missed the first round due to other school commitments and completed his five rounds undefeated.

Inspirational stuff!

The chess community in Queensland is abuzz with news that Gold Coast 18-year-old chess talent Matt Sonter, who won the Hervey Bay Open earlier this year, has received a scholarship to study chess at the University of Texas, Dallas, the United States. Matt has been player chess since the age of five and is looking forward to having access to full-time chess coaching and competing in national and international competitions. He has his sights set on an International Master title and hopefully in the future he will return to Australia and pass on some of the knowledge learned. The scholarships is estimated to be worth $77,000 Australian dollars.

Photo Gallery

Results from the Fun Day at the Great Australian Ice Creamery in Gladstone on Wednesday, July 4. Nine-minute a side times were set for the eight round challenge.

There were 27 players attending the Fun Day on July 4. Best Boy went to
Luke Wagner with 6/8 games, Luke has just returned home from a trip to the
Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Noosa where he played chess in a lot of
tournaments. At the Gold Coast Luke tied 1st in group E and shared
first place. While he was in Brisbane he played in two tournaments: The
Queensland Under-8 Championships where he came 3rd and the Under-10 Queensland Championships where he came 5th. Then he played at the Suncoast Open at Noosa where he came 55th out of 71 players and narrowly missed a prize in D division. We can see by Luke's improvement how experience can help players improve their game.

Best Girl at the tournament was Kimberley Kirby with 5/8 games. Two girls shared Best Girl's spot with 5/8 games but after using the Buchholtz points system, Kimberley just pipped Danielle Johnston for the prize.

The boys had a five way tie for Best Boy.

Group results: Group A, Michael Webster 1st, 2nd James Forsyth.

Group B, Shannon Pink 1st, Mark Johnson 2.

Group C, Jonathan Bush 1, Joshua Foley 2.

Group D, Sarah Cook 1, Rachel Kirby 2/
