Rexsom Hall: Chester, VA

I just wanted to let you know of something interesting that happened around the area I live. Actually, from what I understand, it has been going on from quite some time.

I live in Richmond, VA. During the Halloween week, a local radio station, B103.7 decided to get listeners to call in and tell them about their true stories of local haunted places. I couldn't believe how may callers mentioned the same place: Rexsom Hall. Rexsom Hall, located in Chester, VA, (Just South of Richmond) off Route 10.

After the response they had about Rexsom Hall, they called Rexsom Hall (Which is an old, beautiful house where people still hold weddings and that sort of thing). They asked if on Halloween Eve they (the DJ's and some listeners) could spend the night in the house and wake up there Halloween morning. They wanted to experience something for themselves. Of course, in the spirit of Halloween, the curator agreed.

I have never experienced anything personally, but this is what I understand:

Years ago, in the late 1800s or early 1900s, this house was occupied by a family. Apparently, the family died in the house and was burried on the land. The house has been moved to make room for a strip mall that now occupies the property.

It is said that the daughter wanders the property searching for the lost burial plots of her family. The burial plots are now located under the Ukrops parking lot. Therefore, never to be found.

One caller stated that approximately 10 years back, she and a friend went to visit the house to see if they could experience anything. (Having heard the legend.) Each of the two girls started at the front of the house and went seperate ways around to try to find an unlocked door or window. They met at the back of the house and agreed there was no way they were getting in. When they started back around to the front, something about the side entrance caught one of the girl's eye. She approached the door to find that the door was still locked. When she turned to walk away, the opened by itself. The girl mentioned that she took it as an invitation, but not one she was sure she wanted to accept. She pulled the door shut and left shaking.

When I heard that anyone who was interested in spending the night in the house for Halloween could, my heart began to pound. All my life I have believed in ghosts / spirits, but have never seen anything. (Besides my eyes playing tricks on me maybe!) I am the mother of a two year old and was unable to attend the "PARTY" because I had to work and take care of my daughter that night.

I woke up early that Halloween morning. I had been barely able to sleep in anticipation of the broadcast the radio personallities were going to have from Rexsom Hall in the morning. It turned out that three people from the radio station and nine listeners showed up to spend the night in the haunted house.

All of them had a story.

It had been noted that the spirit who haunts Rexsom Hall is a woman dubbed the "Lady in Red." She is said to be a gentle spirit who likes to play games and doesn't like men. Footsteps are heard around the house and things are moved from their places.

All the listeners slept in the same room on the floor. Shortly after 2:00 am, they all were awakened by the sound of footsteps overhead. They did a head count and later confered with the radio personalities in the next room and concluded that no one had been up and walking around (to go to the bathroom, etc.).

One gentleman was having trouble sleeping, tossing and turning after the footstep incident; it was just after 5:00 a.m. He heard the clock chime and then rolled over to try and sleep. When he did, he heard a soft grandmotherly voice say, "Good night". No one in the room was awake but him.

They all confirmed cold spots in the woman's bedroom -- which is where the DJ's were sleeping by the way. The strangest thing that happened was when they least expected it. Two of the radio people were getting ready to leave early the next morning. The third was with them helping to carry items to their car. When the man went to insert the key in the trunk to open it, the horn of the car sounded 4 times and the lights flashed. Then, as soon as it had started, it stopped. All three witnesses swear that none of them ever touched the car and the car DOES NOT have a car alarm. The car has NEVER had a car alarm.

Like I said earlier, I have never had any personal experiences, but I find ghosts very interesting. To be honest, I'm not sure if I REALLY want to have an experience. I'm a chicken, I guess!!

I just thought this was a great story because of all the people who confirm the identical circumstances. I hope you find it interesting as well! Maybe you can begin your own research and share what you discover.

Jayz note: Thanks for the story
