Remnants of Shermans March:Winnsboro SC

My story is not as well reserched as some of your others but here are some facts... I grew up in a very old 2 story house in Winnsboro SC. It used to a plantaion. So when Sherman marched though the south he came accross the house that I was raised in. The size of the house and fields around the house kinda told Sherman who ever lived there had plenty of money. So Sherman paid Mr. Castles ( the current owner at that time) a visit. Sherman told Mr. Castles (give me all of your money) and Mr. Castles didn't have any (he was telling the truth) So Sherman stuffed him into a closet under the stairs with bails of hey and set it on fire. Later the house was put up for rent. The Belk family moved in the house. There oldest son told me that he and his family experianced the some of the same things..... As a child you could hear someone walking up and down the stirs. My grandparents lived in the upstairs of the house and we lived downstairs. My grandfather at the time worked for the state newpaper my parents always told me that he was going out to run his route. But we all knew that that was not the truth becuse grandaddy would not have walked up and down repeatedly. I was a child that tossed and turned in my sleep. I would always manage to get the sheets wraped around my feet. I hated that. If I ever got up to go to the bathroom and came back, my bed would be redone at the bottom so that my feet would not get tangled. Of course I would tell my mom and dad what had happend they never paid any attention to me. But as the years went by mom and dad kinda fessed up. My grandparents where getting old and where not able to make the trip up and down the stairs anymore so they decided to move out into a mobile home. At that point the door to the upstairs was locked that we did not "mess up" anything. At night, the room above mine you could hear somebody walking. It would take three steps and stop and repeat. However the steps would not start where they stoped at... they would start from the original starting point. This would go on for hours in the night time. I can remember one day all of us where outside.. NOBODY was in the house. My mom was sitting on the porch she heard it too. During broud day light!!! I can also recall things being missing around the house. It was nothing to get up to fix you a drink and come back to find your pen, pencil, lighters, spare coins or anything small to be gone when you returned when you knew that you just seen em. My dad was cleaning out a barn at one point... the windows where boarded on each side (one board on the outside and one on the inside) to keep out field mice. When the bords where taken down.. there was 16 lighters in a row. I am all grown up now and don't live there anymore. But everybody knows that Old Man Castles still lives in that house.
