DREAMS IN ISLAM - A WINDOW TO TRUTH AND TO THE HEART

by: Imran N. Hosein

The external form of true religion, i.e., praying with one's feet such-and-such distance apart, one's hands folded and placed on such-and-such a place, the trousers above the ankles, the beard, the Hijab, five daily prayers in the Masjid, etc., while important, will not suffice for a believer to successfully resist the terribly evil forces which challenge Iman (faith) in this age of Fitan (i.e. the last age, which will witness great trials, temptation, evil). The believer needs to penetrate beyond the 'external form' to the 'internal spiritual substance' of true religion if he (or she) is to survive this evil age with Iman intact.

When Truth enters into the heart then the heart is given a divine light (Nurullah) which permits the believer's powers of observation and intuitive insight to penetrate beyond external appearances, to reach internal reality. It is only with that inner light of a discerning heart that one can read the world correctly today. Otherwise, even the best are deceived.

True dreams and visions (Ru'yah Sadiqa), and good dreams and visions (Ru'yah Saliha), since they constitute Bushrah (glad tidings) from Allah, Most High, indicate that a believer has reached the inner substance of true religion and is now on the path of internal growth (i.e., the growth of the Nafs or soul). Indeed such dreams are the last remaining part of Nabuwwah (Prophethood) in the world today.

Dreams are so important that the Prophet (s) declared: "Whoever does not believe in dreams is not one of us." So important are dreams that you 'are' what you 'dream'. "Tell me your dreams", says the author of this book, "and I will tell you who you are."

It is only when a jama'ah produces believers who are blessed with continuous good and true dreams and visions that it can have conclusive confirmation that it is rightly guided.

The Prophet (s) said that there are three kinds of dreams: good dreams and true dreams - which come from Allah, Most High, evil dreams - which come from Satan, and dreams which arise from one's own Nafs (soul). It is a matter of vital importance that the believer should know how to recognize and to respond to all three kinds of dreams.

This book emphasizes the importance of dreams, and, in particular, the phenomenon of true dreams (of which there are no less than eight in the Qur'an), and dreams of the Prophet (s). The author argues that the western epistemology, derived from godless materialism, cannot explain the phenomenon of true dreams, nor can the scientific Protestant Islam of the modern age do so. The Sufis have faithfully preserved the epistemology of Islam which alone can explain a true dream or vision. And Dr. Muhammad Iqbal has directed attention to this epistemology in the first two chapters of his great work : 'The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam'.

Dreams in Islam - A Window to Truth and to the Heart describes the classification and interpretation of dreams, and analyses all eight dreams located in the Qur'an. The book also records all the dreams of the Prophet (s) himself, as well as of his companions.
