Derby City Searchers

... JBLANE reporting

The DERBY CITY SEARCHERS are perhaps best-known for their LET’S PLAY BALL series.  We’ve all had one of their —sometimes elusive— 1/1 geocaches hit our radar at one time or another.

When asked about the origin of the series, MR. DERBY CITY SEARCHER responded, “Our kids played sports here in eastern Louisville which took us to several ballparks and we noticed none of these had caches placed close by.  Everything sort of grew from that point.”

Indeed.  To date, there are fifteen in the series spanning Kentuckiana.  At one point, there was even a LET’S PLAY BALL “IRAQ” (GCQ95R) while MR. DERBY CITY SEARCHER was serving our country overseas as a Major in the United States Army.  “The biggest thing caching did for me [while deployed in Iraq] was my ability to teach soldiers how to use their GPS units.”  Stating plainly that there’s always the potential to be called up again, he currently works as a Unit Manager for Citi Group.  MRS. DERBY CITY SEARCHER is employed as an Office Assistant.  She also volunteers extensively with the PTA.  The rest of the troop consists of BECCABOO (6TH grade), ASHCASH$ (1ST grade), and BUDSTER00 (Kindergarten).

LIBRARYGIRL (Sister/Sister-in-law) is attributed to being the source of their exposure to geocaching. “Getting the kids started, it soon became a family affair,” remarked the Major.  (It should also be noted that this reporter sensed a hint of amusement with the fact that the DERBY CITY SEARCHERS have surpassed their mentor, two-fold.  But who’s counting?)  The DERBY CITY SEARCHERS hope to reach 1,000 finds this summer.

“DCSs” enjoy both hiding and finding caches.  “Finding caches is the real sport, but it takes people out there hiding [caches] or else the sport will not grow.  It’s really great to come up with new ideas and places for hides.  But many of these ideas are variations of things we see out finding caches.”  Favorites they’ve logged include, THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD (GCKE8Q), THIS IS INSANE!!!! (GCRA2V), and MEMORIES OF MONTANA (GCQEPV) which their youngest found almost immediately. (Move over AirRaidFan and Show Me The Cache!)
