Skylark's Art Page

I will be posting my sketches in the following order:

  • Original black and white pencil sketch drawn by hand
  • Black and white sketch painted by Photoshop 5.5
  • The same sketch manipulated in a collage once again using Photoshop 5.5
  • NEW! Watercolor Paintings that has NO computer enhancement!
  • NEW! Digital Flower paintings taken by HP 318 camera!

Interesting note: I have no art training whatsoever. No photography classes. No sketch classes. No watercolor painting classes. What you see is raw Skylark, which is why it might lack style.

Welcome to Skylark's Art Page!

Another digital flower camera picture taken with my HP 318 camera. These flowers were also in front of an apartment building behind some bushes, so I had to crouch behind the bushes to take this photo.

These digital flower photos were taken as I walked around my neighborhood in people's flower gardens and then I just leaned close to the flowers and snapped a picture.

This particular digital photo I took from the front yard of an apartment building.

Believe it or not, this photo was taken in front of an office building. While taking this photo, I tried hard not to take a photo of the concrete because the flower patch was surrounded by sidewalk.

This is a watercolor painting of a tree that is outside of my house. There is NO computer painting on this picture.

This is a watercolor painting of a flower in a watercolor book for beginners written by Walter Foster. This watercolor painting has NO computer effects. In fact, this was my very first watercolor painting. I love watercolor painting, it's just too bad I don't have enough time to indulge in it more often.

This is also a watercolor painting of a mountain taken from a watercolor book for beginners written by Walter Foster. This was my second try at watercolor painting which is messy but fun to do.

This is a photo of a flower I took with my Photosmart HP 318 digital camera I have no training in photography or the arts for that matter. I simply went outside and snapped a picture of a flower.

This is a photo I took with my digital camera. It was fun going outside on a sunny day and then snap pictures of flowers because flowers are naturally beautiful. This photo was taken when I crouched behind some bushes to get to the flowers.

This is also a photo taken with my digital camera. My digital camera comes out with very sharp colors and there is no computer rendering or painting in these photos.

This photo was the very first flower photo I shot with my digital camera I just came in close to the flower and without any adustment I just snapped the picture and the digital camera automatically focused on the image.

I started with a black and white sketch and then I used color pencils and then I used computer paint to get this effect..

It started as a black and white sketch and then I used color pencils and then I used artistic paint filters on Photoshop 5.5 to get this paint effect.

I just sketched a flower and then colored it in using colored pencils and mixing a lot of colors together.

I played with the filters on Photoshop and pretty much used all the distort filters to get that swirling color effect. My favorite filter is the lens flare filter. I think I used too many filters on this piece but I hope you enjoy my swirling vortex.

This is a black and white pencil sketch of Iolaus standing on a beach just right after he has had a dip in the ocean. This is the first time I have ever drawn the human form from the back. I drew this form from my imagination. There are no photos of Iolaus like this!

I colored in this b/w sketch using the swatch palette in Photoshop. I must admit however that the swatch palette in Photoshop seems to have a very limited amount of colors. Still I wanted to capture the effect of the sun glinting off Iolaus' hair and wet body by using the white swatch over the darker colors. The white swatch does bring out the glare of the sun to just the right spots don't you think?

This collage was done on a multicolored background. I used a noise filter and a solarized and solar edge filter to get the colors in the background to glow. Then I put 4 copies of my black and white sketch of Iolaus in his swimwear on top of the background and I put a picture of Iolaus' face in the middle. I love the effect of having Iolaus back and face in the same photo. It makes it seem like he's turning his head to look at you!

This sketch I did take from a Hercules photo and it's the photo where Iolaus cries on Hercules' shoulder. I admit that when I drew this sketch I made Hercules' arm too small and Iolaus' face too big. I still need to work on my proportions. Plus I had trouble capturing the look of anguish on Iolaus' face which is so clear on the original photo. I do believe that this is a scene taken from the episode "Top God" when Hercules was going off to become full God and leaving Iolaus behind.

I hope that coloring the above picture will give the viewer a better idea of what I drew. I had trouble drawing Hercules' clothing because it was so close to his arm. Also I have not yet taught myself how to draw musclature so that's why Hercules' muscles look so odd. And there is way too much purple in this picture because the swatches on Photoshop have a very limited array of colors to work with and I need to learn how to make my own color swatches and create my own colors.

This is a black and white pencil sketch of Iolaus taken from a Hercules photo where Iolaus is smiling while standing in a field of green. I love this photo because when Iolaus smiles, his eyes smile too. I don't think I did a good job capturing that smile in his blue eyes.

I used Photoshop 5.5 paintbrush function to color Iolaus in. I used muted opaque setting of about 12 to get the lighter shading and used heavier opaque setting to get the darker colors.

I used an yellow orange gradient background and then I used the drop shadow effect underneath the sketch.

This is probably the only art not at all related to fanfiction. It was very relaxing for me to draw something that just flowed and for which I did not have to pay attention to proportions too much.

I used Photoshop 5.5 large 300 brush to get the colors I needed. This version actually looks like the photo I copied from. The computer colors adds a touch of realism and depth to the black and white sketch. I color straight from the b/w sketch and then just fill the b/w sketch in with computer color.

I am just learning how to draw profiles. I took this b/w pencil sketch from a Hercules photo where Iolaus is worried about Hercules' injury in the episode "Mother of all Monsters". I tried to get the worried look on Iolaus.

I then took this profile sketch of Iolaus and painted it in using Photoshop 5.5. I did not scan in the picture into the computer since my scanner does not work, instead I used a digital camera and took pictures of all my pictures and then used those digital pictures for these sketches.

This was my very first sketch. You will notice that the eyeballs do not line up. The nose and the mouth do not line up. LOL! I used Nannyboo's screensaver of Dylan Hunt on her Andromeda website for this sketch. So I drew directly from my computer screensaver for this sketch. Thanks Nannyboo for your artwork for inspiring this sketch!

I used Photoshop 5.5 to color Hercules in. The coloring was done in the same style as the previous sketches by using lighter opacity to achieve the lighter colors and heavier opacity to achieve the darker colors. Strange thing though every time I tried to color Hercules' hair with a brown paintbrush, the color always came out purple! That's why Hercules has purple hair in this picture!

I used Hercules' eyes as the background layer. Then I used the bespeckle noise filter to get that busy effect. And then I put the b/w sketch of Hercules on top of the Hercules eye background and voila you have a collage!

This is a black and white pencil sketch of Tom Welling, the actor who plays Clark Kent on the hit TV show, Smallville.

This is a Photoshop 5.5 colored picture of an original b/w sketch of Clark Kent of Smallville. I made his skin way too tan but he still looks cute. This was my first computer rendering that's why I did not understand at the time how to use the opacity function to make colors lighter and darker for proper shading.

Disregard the Click here sign. This is simply a graphic and that's it. I drew these eyes from Nannyboo's screensaver of Dylan Hunt. In the screensaver, Dylan Hunt has HUGE eyes so I figured it would be the perfect model for Dylan Hunt's eyes. Since I draw so badly I bet nobody guessed whose eyes they were right!

The Answer: Hercules' eyes

For more great art, go see the art of the phenominal cartoonist, Denny Bustamante. He has been a cartoonist for over 40 years. He can draw a cartoon sketch in just a few minutes. Click on the following button to see Denny's great web page:

Denny drew that above sketch especially for me as a Christmas present. He uses a special kind of color markers and he uses a special kind of thick paper used specially for color markers and that's all he uses.
