Boarding Kennel

On Summer 1999, my Mom had board me in Twinlake Veterinary Hospital because she had gone for a holiday. Even though its only a week since she left me there, I felt that she was gone forever. Gosh, I really missed her a lot. Well, to tell you the truth, I din't like staying there. I quivered when my mom left me in the kennel. The staff said that I was too nervous. But on the following days, I was not that nervous anymore. The staff told me that I had a great personality. I did not bark excessively like the other dogs. I was described as calm and quiet. I was allowed to go out to do my daily routine of human nature for at least 15 minutes. 7 days without my mom is a terrible thing. But hey, I was soon back in my home sweet home and my mom showered me with all her love. Below are some of the advises from my mom in choosing boarding kennel.

1)  Do research through the internet, books or by talking to other pet owners the advantages and disadvantages of boarding your dog in the kennel.

 2) Ask for referrals from your vet, breeder and friends.

 3) Before boarding your pet, tour the kennel. Check if the kennel is clean and observe how the staff treats the dogs there. Always trust your instinct. If you have bad instinct about the place, then don't board your dog there regardless of how badly you need a boarding kennel immediately.

 4) Make an appointment to board your dog early during the holiday seasons. Usually most of the kennels are full, so book early.

 5) Have all your dog's vaccines, especially the kennel cough, up-to-date. All reputable kennels will not allow any dog in unless the dog's vaccines are current.

 6) Leave your phone number and address to the staff in case of emergency.

7)  Bring along some your dog's favorite toys to the kennel.(check with the staff if it is allowed). Also, it is better that you bring your own dog's food.

 8) Make sure that your dog is free of ticks and fleas before you board your dog.

  9) Most of the dogs may eat less food in the kennel due to stress. So don't be surprise if your dog appear thin.

 10) Lastly, give your dog plenty of love when return from the kennel.
