Mary Murfree

Mary Noailles Murfree was born in 1850 in Murfreesboro, TN (Parks 9). She spent her summers in the Cumberland Mountains, which inspired her to writer her many stories and novels. Murfree wrote her books under the pseudonym "Charles Egbert Craddock." Murfree is known for her romantic local color writing. Her novels include IN THE TENNESSEE MOUNTAINS, which went through 23 editions in her lifetime, and THE PROPHET OF THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS (Higgs 133).

Interesting Fact: Her first pseudonym was R. Emment Dembry, but was later changed to Charles Egbert Craddock. "Egbert Craddock" was a character in a story, and "Charles" made it sound better (Parks 60, 93).
