TEACCH At Home:
Compliance

Goal:  Your child will learn how to follow simple verbal commands.

Materials:  As needed.

Stimuli:  As appropriate.

Step 1:  Your child will respond to the command, "_______(name of child), sit down" with full physical prompts.

Step 2:  Your child will respond to the command, "_______(name of child), sit down" with partial physical prompts.

Step 3:  Your child will respond to the command, "________(name of child), sit down" with a model.

Step 4:  Your child will respond to the command, "________(name of child), sit down" independently.

Step 5:  Repeat steps 1-4 for the command, "__________(name of child), come here."

Step 6:  Your child will respond to the commands, "Sit down" and "Come here," when given randomly alternated.

Step 7:  Repeat steps 1-6 for the command, "________(name of child), time to work."

Working at the table will be difficult until your child understands and is familiar with the routine.  The ideas behind the TEACCH program can be used informally throughout the day to encourage your child to learn these skills.  For example, whenever you have the child engaged in an activity, say, "________(name) sit down" or "time to sit," and encourage the child to sit. Reinforce appropriate sitting with praise, material reinforcement or continuance of the activity.

Other Compliance Ideas:  give me, hands down, come here, give me five, stand up, sit down, look, come here, go to mommy, quiet feet.
