UNIT STUDIES
Definition: Unit Study approach is when you totally immerse your child in a particular topic. During the study you cover a wide array of subjects in the process. Unit study enthusiasts think this is a more natural approach to learning. You see your topic as part of a "whole" picture. Families can learn topics together, which is a great advantage. Also the unit studies are more interesting and fun than traditional workbook/textbook approach.

A few of my favorite quotes:

"...schools are just not set up to teach the way long experience has shown people learn. [In formal schooling] too many young people gain nothing except the conviction they are misfits." ~ John Taylor Gatto

"If schools didn't insist on...compulsory attendance, everyone would leave except the teachers who are being paid. Is there anyone out there who doesn't understand this?" ~ John Taylor Gatto

"Schooling and education are not the same thing. Schools are a business having very little to do with education." ~ John Taylor Gatto

"I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom... As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous... In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized."  ~ Haim Ginott

"A teacher affects eternity; no one can tell where his influence stops."
~ Henry Adams

"It is not enough to prepare our children for the world,
we also must prepare the world for our children." ~ Luis J. Rodriguez
