Old Friends, New Foes..!
Hal
is in hog heaven as he flies over L.A., so happy to be home.
Before heading home to Carol, he has to save a drunk driver and
literally bottle him up for the cops. He removes his costume and
returns to find Carol awake, and she tells him to get ready for
work.
As Hal is preparing to tell Carol a
"marvelous way" to spend what time they have, a call is
coming in to Monitor's satellite above the earth. Congressman
Jason Bloch wants to "step up his campaign against Ferris
Aircraft." But Hal has returned to Earth, and he "has
always exhibited an uncommon fondness for Ferris." But it
won't be a problem for Monitor and Lyla, since it may actually
stir up some extra business. So Monitor allows the call from
Bloch to go through.
Back on Earth, Hal and Carol arrive
at Ferris as Carol explains some of the changes tha have happened.
As they ride by a construction site, a girder snaps loose! Hal
jumps out and tackles the man under it to safety. The man turns
out to be Richard Davis, an old friend of Hal's, and he says
hello. But as he and Carol head off, Davis wonders why Hal had to
come back now and "spoil everything"...
Carol takes Hal to a lab where some
sort of chair device is being tested. Carol introduces Hal to the
scientist, Dr. Clay Kendall, who appeared to have ruined Hal's
and Carol's relationship until Carol explained otherwise (GL #172)
and his partners: April O'Rourke, who is also his fiancee, and
Jake Ramirez, whose full name isn't worth bothering to type :)
They're studying psionics--the science of the mind--and Clay has
invented a Psi-Chair with which he hopes to move a paper airplane
by sheer force of will. They ask Hal to try it, but he refuses.
But Carol insists, and he gives it a go. He concentrates extra
hard, and he flies the plane! He pretends like it was a breeze
that made the plane fly, so as to protect his identity. He and
Carol leave as Clay attempts to sort the whole thing out.
Meantime, north of L.A., a couple
of Ferris truckers are stopped by the Javelin, an overconfident
villian with a heavy German accent. They try to run him down, but
his expertly-thrown javelin blows up the front of the truck. The
truckers try to fight him but ae easily taken out. Javelin radios
the base ant tells them they can "commence pick-up."
Back at Ferris, Pieface is working
on a plane as Hal pops in. Pie is elated to have Hal back. The
plane is Bruce Gordon's new and improved solar jet. He seems to
have been cured of the affliction of Eclipso, and, once the solar
engine is installed, Hal can test the plane. But the phone rings,
and Carol recieves the news that the engine has been hijacked!
Hal offers to help, and he heads off to his office, where he
suits up and charges up. As he looks for clues, he flies over a
couple policemen who can't believe that the hijackers used a
javelin and rode off on flying bicycles. The bicycles left a
residue trail that Hal easily trails to the thugs. They are
easily dealt with, until Javelin comes along. He uses a javelin
that sprays yellow plastic. The plastic coats Hal and his ring,
and there's no way he can stay aloft!

An
alien GL's ship is shot down by a bunch of yellow lasers, and it
crashes on another alien planet, leaving the GL alive long enough
to pass his ring and battery on to another alien (sounds
familiar, huh?). He tests out his newest acquisition: A rainstorm
strikes, and he is able to create an umbrella. He sees his
brethren dragging cow carcasses across the land, and makes carts
to help them.
In the city, the new GL, now in
costume, sees a girl about to be attacked and mucks up the would-be
attackers. He then heads before some grand council. They want him
to destroy some ships that are moving on the planet. He heads
into space to confront them, but is shot down... turns out these
were the same yellow ships that killed the first GL. He falls
toward another planet, "and so it goes..."
