In
space, GL Gala De of Loga 14 finds two ships firing at each other.
When he shoots at a red beam, it turns yellow and kills him! His
assailants' ship is then shot, killing all aboard it except one
Taupin, who was a slave but is suddenly free. In trying to save
the ship, he causes it to disappear and reappear in the U.S.,
wobbling out of control and cracking a dam!
Meanwhile, Hal, driving his mammoth
18-wheeler, is alerted to the fact over his CB. He pulls over,
suits up, and flies over to find the dam gushing. He easily fuses
the dam together but, unbeknownst to him, has been tracked by
Taupin. Hal puts up a shield, but Taupin's "xantha" ray
could nullify his ring as it had Gala De's. The beam pierces
Hal's shield, but misses Hal himself. However, it ricochets off
the water and nails Hal from the back. He careens into the water,
and is unable to work his ring!
Meanwhile, over in Star City, Ollie
and Dinah have a falling-out when she chooses to leave. GA is
understandably pissed.
Over on Oa, the Guardians have
spotted a time-null near Earth. They want to warn Hal not to go
off into space, but it's too late, he already is. After charging
his ring, he spots a curious, multicolored area. This happens to
be the time-null zone, and he is caught in time!
Several days later, Dinah sees Taupin offering "qualified"
Earthlings an opportunity to travel through space for free,
except for some work, on the news. Dinah finds the idea tempting,
and goes to sign up the next day. Taupin finds her to be an
"excellent candidate", and lets her sign up. Ollie
shows up and tries to stop her, but to no avail. He attempts to
sign up, but fails the test. He feels a bit sorry for himself,
but quickly realizes that he's acting uncharacteristically, and
changes into GA costume. He uses a line arrow to pull himself up
and onto the ship stairs.
Crawling along, he spots Taupin
instructing the passengers, including Dinah, to put metal skull
caps on. When they do, he tells them what the caps are for: They
are now forced to obey his commands. After Taupin changes the
ship back into its original shape and structure, Ollie pops in,
shoots Taupin's gun out of his hand, and tells him to release the
prisoners. Taupin instead tells them to attack Ollie, but they
and Taupin get beaten down. But then Dinah orders him to release
Taupin, and attempts to choke Ollie out. He breaks the chokeold,
and attempts to smash Dinah to bring her back to her senses. But
she throws him off, and in the process, breaks the cord on her
skull-cap (pay attention, that'll be important next issue!)
Taupin then opens the ship's
airlock, and intends to push Ollie out into deep space! Not good...
