OFFICIAL 2004 RULES
The Knik-McGrath 300 is now scheduled to start Feb 14th
The Knik-McGrath 300 International Sled Dog Race is an open class race for all dog mushers with at least minimal mushing skills and a good number of miles on their dogs. It is the intent of this race that all mushers and dogs leave Knik and arrive safely in McGrath and a good time is had by all. If you have any comments about the rules, please contact us and we will be happy to consider them. Start date is February 14.
I. Race Registration (1) Race registration and entry fee must be received by February 7, or postmarked by that date. Entry fee may be mailed or personally delivered to Missy’s Alaskan Gifts & Information Center, 601 ½ West Parks Hwy, Wasilla, AK 99687 (next to Wasilla Chevron). Late entry fees will be accepted up to drawing of positions. Entry fee is $325.00 (for both competitive and camper class). Check should be made payable to Mat-Su Musher’s Sports Authority. Late entry fee is $375.00. Entry fee for two musher camper class is $375.00
II. Musher Classes There will be two classes of mushers, competitive class and camper or recreational class. The camper class mushers will not compete for prize money but must use same rules as competitive class. Within the camper class, two mushers may run with one team. Two sleds are required. The lead sled must pull the second sled. Freight sled class mushers must use a conventional basket sled with stanchions and at least 8 feet basket boards with a minimum 22 inch width
III. Pre-Race Veterinary Exam (1) Pre-race veterinary exam will be at Knik Bar on Wednesday, two days before race start. Proof of rabies, parvo, distemper and corona vaccination is required. List of dogs and date de-wormed should be part of the paperwork. Mushers unable to attend pre-race veterinary exam, may present their paperwork and proof of dog exam by a licensed veterinarian no later than race start. Dog microchip identification is helpful but not required.
IV. Position Drawing (1) Position drawing will be day before the race at Knik Bar approx 7pm. A race meeting will follow the position drawing to discuss trail conditions and questions. Position drawing is February 13, 2004. If a musher can not attend the position drawing, his or her team will leave last in the appropriate class.

VI. Food Drops (1) Dog food and supplies for Nikolai and McGrath must be left at Knik Bar, day before race (if Nikolai and McGrath bags are left with other checkpoint bags, we cannot guarantee delivery in time for race pickup) (2) Food drops for Skwentna, Finger Lake, Rainy Pass and Rohn must be delivered to Knik Bar, Knik,AK day of race. (3) Food drops for Nikolai and McGrath may be sent by mushers using US mail or via Northern Air Cargo in Anchorage. Entry fee monies will be used to help pay for transport to the checkpoints, however, mushers are responsible for costs of transport from Anchorage to McGrath and from McGrath to Anchorage. All food and gear bags must be clearly marked KM 300 or Knik-McGrath 300, the appropriate check point name and the musher’s name or kennel name. Dropped dogs can be sent to either McGrath (for return to Anchorage) or Knik for $25.00 per dog. Kennel arrangements have been made for dropped dogs sent to Knik at no fee for the mushers
VII. Race Start
(1) The start date and time is the second Saturday of each February approx. Noon Knik Lake, Alaska. Race is scheduled to start February 14, 2004. The competitive teams will leave first followed by the camper teams. The teams will leave the starting line at 2-minute intervals. Mushers may haul or carry two non-participating passengers to the Burma Road intersection. A musher who cannot leave the starting line in the order drawn will start as soon as possible with no time penalty. Any assistance may be used to help this team get out on the trail.
VIII. Trail Rules (1) Passing: when one team approaches within fifty (50) feet of another team, the team behind shall have the immediate right of way upon demand. The musher ahead must stop the dogs and hold them to the best of his/her ability for a maximum of one minute or until the other team has passed, whichever occurs first. The passed team must wait at least ten (10) minutes before demanding the trail. (2) Parking: A musher must select a campsite off the race trail so that the team cannot interfere with other teams, i.e. no snacking of dogs in the trail. A musher needing to stop momentarily must not interfere with the progress of another team. Teams must be parked at designated localized holding areas in checkpoints in places that do not interfere with the movements of other teams and mushers. No parking or camping is permitted within one (1) mile of checkpoints or villages. (3) Litter: No litter of any kind may be left on the trail, in camps or in checkpoints. All material remaining in checkpoints must be left in designated areas. In localized holding areas and on the trail, excessive left over dog food is considered litter. For purposes of these rules, straw is not considered litter. (4) Splitting teams at Rainy Pass: Two sled teams may leave a sled at Rainy Pass Lodge and double up for rest of trail or split the team into two separate teams and regroup as one team at Rohn or continue as two teams.
IX. Mandatory Items A musher must have with him/her at all times the following items: 1.proper cold weather sleeping bag weighing a minimum of 5 lbs 2.Ax, head to weight a minimum of 1&3/4 lbs, handle to be a least 22 inches long. 3. One pair of snowshoes with bindings, each snowshoe to be a least 252 square inches in size. 4. Eight booties fore each dog in the sled or in use. 5. One operational cooker and pot capable of boiling at least three (3) gallons of water
X. Musher Conduct and Qualifications (1) Musher Qualifications: Mushers must be eighteen years of age as of the starting date of the race. (2) Good Samaritan Rule for Competitive Mushers: A musher will not be penalized for aiding another musher in an emergency. (3) Interference: A musher may not tamper with another musher’s dogs, food or gear or interfere in any manner with the progress of another team. (4) Sportsmanship: Any musher must use civil conduct and act in a sportsmanlike manner throughout the race. Mushers should try to be good spokesmen and women for our sport of mushing and display high standards of healthcare for our dogs. (5) Outside Assistance (excluding two mushers per team in noncompetitive class): A musher may not receive outside assistance between checkpoints. All care and feeding of dogs will be done only by that team’s musher. No planned help, including verbal assistance (i.e. coaching) is allowed throughout the race, at or between checkpoints. All dog maintence and care of dog teams and gear in checkpoints will be done in the designated localized holding area only. (6) Lost Food: A musher may replace lost or unusable dog food shipments at checkpoints through whatever methods are available. (7) One Musher per Team (Competitive Class): Only one musher will be permitted per team and that musher must complete the entire race. This rule excludes two mushers per team allowed in camper class. (8) Killing of Game Animals: In the event that an edible big game animal, i.e. moose, caribou, buffalo, is killed in defense of life or property, the musher must gut the animal and report the incident at the next checkpoint. Approaching mushers my help gut the killed animal. No teams may pass until the animal has been gutted and the musher killing the animal has proceeded. Any other animal killed in defense of life or property must be reported, but need not be gutted.
XI. Veterinary Care and Dog Care in General (1) Dog Care: Dogs must be maintained in good condition and cared for properly. This includes but is not limited to proper caloric intake, water intake and foot care. All water and food must be ingested voluntarily. (2) Shelter for Dogs: Dogs may not be brought into shelters except for race veterinarian’s medical examination or treatment. Dogs must be returned outside as soon as such examination or treatment is competed unless the dog is dropped from the race. (3) Cruel and Inhumane Treatment: There will be no cruel or inhumane treatment of dogs. Cruel or inhumane treatment involves any action or inaction, which causes preventable pain or suffering to a dog. (4) Injured, Fatigued or Sick Dogs: All injured, fatigued or sick dogs that are dropped from the race must be left at a designated dog drop. Any dropped dog must be left with four pounds of dog food and a reliable chain or cable (16 to 18 inches in length) with swivel snap and collar. (5) Expired Dogs: It is hoped that there are no expired dogs during this race and mushers do everything possible to prevent dog deaths. However, any dog that expires on the trail must be taken by the musher to a checkpoint. The musher may transport the dog to either the checkpoint just passed or the upcoming checkpoint. The race veterinarian shall make every attempt to determine the cause of death. If a necropsy is required, costs will be paid by the musher. There will be a 4 hr penalty for a musher with an expired dog. That musher may continue the race. However, if the race veterinarian determines cause of dog death was due to cruel or inhumane treatment, the musher is not eligible for prize money and a letter will be sent to ITC. The 4 hr penalty will be added to the mandatory 4 hr stop at Nikolai (6) Harness and Cables: Dogs must leave checkpoints with functional, non-chafing harnesses. A musher must carry cable tie-out lines or have cable in the towline capable of securing the team. (7) Drug Use: No injectable or oral drug which may suppress the signs of illness or injury may be used on a dog. A musher may not inject any substance into their dogs. No other drugs or other artificial means may be used to drive a dog to perform or attempt to perform beyond its natural ability. The following drugs are prohibited: A. Anabolic Steroids B. Analgesic (prescriptive and non-prescriptive) C. Anesthetics D. antihistamines E. Anti-inflammatory drugs including but not limited to: 1.Cortico-steroids (except for use on dog’s feet) 2.Antiprostaglandins 3.Non-steroidals 4.Salicylates 5.DMSO F.Bronchodilators G. Central Nervous System stimulants H. Cough Suppressants I. Diuretics J. Injectable Anticolinergics K. Muscle Relaxants L. Tranqulizers and Opiates. Mibolerone (Cheque Drops) is permitted only for use as an estrus suppressant in intact females that have not had an ovariohysterectomy. Megesterol acetate (Ovaban) is permitted for use of estrus suppression and medical conditions for which progesterone therapy is appropriate, as approved by race veterinarian (s). The practice of blood doping i.e. injection of whole blood, packed blood cells or blood substitutes is prohibited. Race veterinarians may utilize any of the listed drugs or other prohibited drugs necessary to maintain a dog’s health, however, sugh dogs will be withdrawn from the race. The use of local or general anesthetics will not be allowed in any form unless the dog is withdrawn from the race.
XII. Mandatory Stops. Twelve hour stop: A musher must take one 12-hour stop during the race between Skwentna and Rohn (musher’s option). It is the musher’s responsibility to remain for the entire twelve-hour period. Four Hour stop: All musher’s must take a four hour stop at Nikolai.
XIII. Sled. A musher has a choice of sled. The sled or toboggan must be equipped with a sled bag. The bag must be capable of hauling any injured or fatigued dog under cover, plus equipment and food. Breaking devices must be constructed to fit between the runners and must not extend beyond the tails of the runners. Each sled must have at least one snow hook. Freight sleds must use conventional basket with stanchions and at least 8 feet basket boards with a minimum 22 inch width.
XIV. Dog Maximums and Minimums: The maximum number of dogs a musher may start the race with is sixteen dogs. A musher must have at least ten dogs on the line to start the race. At least five dogs must be on the towline at the finish line. No dogs may be added to a team after the start of the race. All dogs must be either on the towline or hauled in the sled and cannot be led behind the sled or allowed to run loose.
XV. Unmanageable Teams: A musher may seek the aid of others to control an unmanageable team.
XVI. Driverless Team: A team and driver must complete the entire race trail. A driverless team or loose dog may be stopped and secured by anyone. The driver may recover his/her team either on foot, with assistance from another musher or mechanized vehicle and continue the race.
XVII. Motorized Vehicles: A musher may not be accompanied by or accept assistance from any motorized vehicle that gives help to the musher, including aircraft and snow machines, except when recovering a loose dog or driverless team.
XVIII. Scratched Mushers: A musher scratching from the race is responsible for the transportation of his/her dogs and gear off the trail.
XIX. Hauling Dogs: A musher may haul dogs in the sled at his/her discretion, however the musher may not allow any of the dogs to be hauled by another team. Dogs must be hauled in a humane fashion and must be covered if conditions require.
XX. Prize Money: This section will be updated as sponsors and fund raising is completed.
XXI. Switching of Dogs: No dogs may be switched after the pre-race veterinary examination.
