SOUTH BOHEMIAN VILLAGES

They are in the upper Vltava (Moldau) River valley of South Bohemia along the German and Austrian border, in the Böhmerwald. For over 600 years the inhabitants of the area were German culturally. Most of these villages were as high as 100% German. After WW II the residents were expelled and many of the villages were destroyed. The area became a no man's land (Iron Curtain) separating Germany from communist Czechoslovakia. Only since 1990 have the descendents or still living residents ventured back. Usually only to visit their old villages or to try to save their old parish churches.
