USA TODAY October 14, 1992, Wednesday, FINAL EDITION Sinead shed light on her papal slam Sinead O'Connor wants you to know she is ''not your enemy.'' Causing an uproar on Saturday Night Live two weeks ago when she ripped up a picture of the pope, saying ''fight the real enemy,'' the shaved songbird issued a statement Tuesday. Joe Pesci said on this past Saturday Night Live he ''wudda gave her such a smack'' for what she did. About 1,300 protest calls were logged by NBC. Said O'Connor Tuesday: ''To the people who have been offended by what I did ... I respect you for standing up for what you believe in and I want you to know that I am not your enemy. ... We have been given lies to believe in, and I'm trying to tell the truth.'' She suggested studying ''the history of the Roman Empire/ Vatican,'' and looking at how ''they have used marriage, divorce, and ... birth control and abortion to control us through our children and fear.'' Losing contact with ''historical truth,'' she says, ''has resulted in the highest manifestation of the disease of evil which is child abuse, also the root of all evil.'' She signs it: God IS Truth.
