Los Angeles Times February 11, 1991, Monday, P.M. Final SHORT TAKES; SINEAD O'CONNER WANTS TO RETIRE From Times Wire Services Irish singer Sinead O'Connor, who has snubbed pop awards and refused to have the U.S. national anthem played at her concerts, may retire from the music business. The shaven-headed rock star, who turned down music awards in Britain and Ireland and has refused to be considered for the prestigious U.S. Grammy awards, said: "I don't like being famous. I don't like the effect it is having on my life." O'Connor, 23, told Irish radio in a weekend interview that she was seriously considering retirement, adding: "I want to take many years off." O'Connor caused a furor in the United States last year and a stinging rebuke from Frank Sinatra when she banned the playing of the U.S. national anthem at one of her concerts.
