Following the tremendous impact of the Homem-Gabiru exhibit Tarciana and I decided to address the drama of the cyclical droughts that have historically devastated the population in the semi arid regions of Northeastern Brazil.
Many people joined hands to make this mega production a reality: Among these are Dantas Suassuna, Ismael Portela, Didier Block and the entire staff of CAATINGA in the city of Ouricuri, Pernambuco.
This multimedia installation was created from the perspective of the wives of those who, as a last resort, leave family and land in search of work and hope in the large coastal cities.
Launched in Recife in 1994 it has been displayed in the Brazilian National Congress and represented the Brazilian reality at the UN's World Conference on Desertification in 1999.
Widow's of the Drought has also become a bilingual artistic book.
Currently the exhibit is being updated and will accompany the implementation of a large project which will build 100 thousand water cisterns through out the semi arid territories of Northeastern Brazil.
