Whale Watching

Newfoundland is the best place in North America to view whales!

Twenty Two species of whales can be found along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, the humpback and the minke being the most common. There are also Fin, Sperm, Harbour Porpoise and Saddleback Dolphin. Five thousand humpback come to our northern waters during the summer months.

While here they feast on caplin, krill, sand lance and squid, consuming twice there body weight before their long migration to the warmer Caribbean waters where they can mate and calve. They like to breach their 36 tonne body clear out of the water. You can get close enough to smell its salty breath.

Whales can be viewed from the shore such as at St. Vincents on Route 90 where there is a terrific land based look out station complete with telescopes. Also you can take a boat tour to view the whales. Newfoundland is the best place in North America to view Whales, and Icebergs too.
