Historic Avondale Railway Station

The Town of Avondale is located along #60 Highway of Conception Bay about 10 km from Holyrood. The scenery in the area is typical of the Conception Bay Centre area and you will see lots to photograph.

In 1883 trains came into Avondale, then called Salmon Cove. All cargo and passengers who traveled off the Avalon Peninsula passed through this junction. The Railway Station was a very busy place and was a significant part of the community lifestyle. Each day workers from the community would cover miles of track for inspections, maintenance, and switching lines.

Today the railway station is used as a community museum that is rich in Newfoundland heritage and offers guided tours. Last year 4000 people visited the Historic Railway station and had a ride on the speeder over the remaining train tracks. During the ride there are great views, and then there is a hike along the old railway bed, now a part of the Newfoundland Trailway Park. The hike continues to the Salmon River WaterFalls for a picnic. There is also a restaurant called the Express Diner aboard a genuine dining car, which is part of the display of an old train including an engine, dining car, cook car, brake car, and caboose. It is an experience that is full of history. It is a must see for a traveler in the Conception Bay area of the Avalon Peninsula.
