Vaudeville


derived from the French, Middle French, popular satirical song, alteration of vaudevire, from vau-de-Vire valley of Vire, town in northwest France where such songs were composed. Vaudeville is the name for stage entertainment shows consisting of various acts such as performing animals, acrobats, comedians, dancers, or singers. This form of entertainment of the 19th and early 20th century was presented in England mainly in music halls and in the USA by traveling road shows. These shows lived on in in the 70's in the bizarre or trivial stage shows of rock bands like Alice Cooper or Slade. Musical elements of the music hall sound can be found in several British bands like the Beatles, Queen and Blur, just to name a few.
