Are you surprised to find Al Pacino in the list of Artists who have put Shakespeare on film? Don't be -- all real actors are dying to interpret The Bard. Al Pacino's film Looking for Richard is absolutely delightful. I first saw this one at the Chicago Film Festival, in a restored theater that featured an organ show before the movie, a ceiling that has stars on it, and has the real feel of a theater -- not a multiplex. What a great place to see an open look at our American link to the British stage, the history of our language, and the interpretive process of staging a great drama. This movie features a number of familiar American actors. Winona Rider, Kevin Spacey, Estelle Parsons, and Al Pacino as Richard III. Pacino spent 10 years making this film and it fully measures up to the standard the Shakespeare's Forest movie-sprite uses to evaluate Shakespeare on film: it both entertains and educates. It is accessable to nonscholars and delightful to Shakespeare scholars.
