Shakespeare : The Invention of the Human
by Harold Bloom. Hardcover
Harold Bloom has been around, reading and writing, for many years. He has written
the book that has been rambling around in his head for many years. His thesis is
that Shakespeare is the first writer to include character development in his literature.
This is an oversimplification of this theory, but you have to agree it's
interesting.
Personally, I find Harold Bloom a bit dogmatic. If you can get past his tangents
on anyone who has written criticism since 1970 or anyone who doesn't agree with his view
of literature, you will enjoy this read. He is a fine writer when he sticks to his
thesis and he develops his arguments beautifully. One review I read described this
book by saying that it's written well enough to enjoy even if you don't agree with Mr.
Bloom.
