Kenneth Branagh strikes again!! His version of Much Ado About Nothing is a great introduction to Shakespeare for kids (and immature grown-ups). An audience that is unfamiliar with Shakespeare will feel at ease with Denzel Washington (who is dashing in the blue leather pants and boots) and Michael Keaton ("Write it down that I am an ass."). The composer Patrick Doyle appears in this film as Balthazar. This is an adaptation. Branagh changes the order of the scenes, and breaks the golden rule of Elizabethan Comedy: he shows the villain at the end -- but it works because the villain is Keanu Reeves. The banter between Benedick and Beatrice is priceless, and Emma Thompson is radiant as Beatrice, the country lady. |
